Greyhound buses?

So, I'm traveling around the northeast to a bunch of random cities next week, and I'm going by myself to meet up with a bunch of random college friends. I'm flying into DC saturday, and out of Pittsburgh next sunday, and I'm taking Amtrak between the stops. However, Amtrak is not available for one of the routes. I'm still a cheap grad student, so I don't really want to spend $150 to rent a car, and I don't want to fly around the country to get from one mid-market place to the other, so I've been considering taking a Greyhound bus. Its during the day, and it may be a little shady, but I'm not really too picky or too worried about it.

For anyone that has taken this type of transportation, is this a viable option?

Yeah. If you're not going too far. I'd check to see how many stops are in between your two pints.

If you are not afraid of a bus full of runaways and people with questionable citizenship, sanity and bowel control, I say go for it.

You know, as long as I don't get knifed, at least I'll have an interesting story someday. Hell, even if I do get knifed and survive, I'll have an interesting story someday.

Maybe I'll meet some cool people along the way. Its a 5 hour ride for what normally would be a 3-3.5 hour trip.

I did it from Oklahoma City to Ames on an overnight. Pretty much went strait through. Busses are difficult to sleep on, but they were bearable. Just make sure you have something to do during the trip.

It is highly likely that you will have stories. I decided to take the Greyhound "Express" bus that runs from Chicago to LA. I did this because I don't particularly like to fly, and needed to get from DM to Vegas for a convention. I sat up front by the driver (kind of like kindergarten), as I felt just about as out of place as my first day of school.

A kindly minister and his wife were across from me...the only other normal people on the bus. On the way back of course, the bus originated in LA...quite the characters traveling on that one. I got on in Vegas. About six hours (somewhere in Utah) out, the bus was stopped and raided by the Feds...probably twenty of them...they were looking for people, weapons, and drugs. Hauled probably six or eight of the passengers away.

The funniest part was that everyone on the bus had to stay in their seats while the bags under the bus were searched; two other officers started in the back of the bus and searched carry on bags. Again, I was in the front of the bus. I apparently looked a bit "out of place" as when they got to me, the guy looked at me and said "is that your bag?" I replied in the affirmative; he patted me on the shoulder and moved on. So, be prepared for the "interesting" to say the least.
