Great Basketball Moments

Finally, it’s about time for basketball season to start. I’m not sure if anyone else feels this way, but my anticipation for a football season never comes close to the excitement I have built up for every basketball season. I’m not sure if it’s due to growing up a Cyclone fan during the time of Johnny Orr’s reign, or if it’s because I was growing up a Cyclone fan during the Criner and Walden eras. Probably a little of both!

Anyways, now that we’re on the verge of a new season, I can’t help but think about the great moments in ISU basketball. Here are some of my favorites, what are yours?

- Fizer stuffs it over Chris Mihm in ‘00 to secure Big 12 title
- Jacque Vaughn driving to the hoop and missing at the buzzer for Big 8 Tournament Championship in 1996
- Lafester putting up 54 against Iowa in ‘87
- Tinsley’s two steals in the late minutes to beat Kansas in Lawrence in ‘00 for the first time in what seemed like forever
- Hoiberg’s two free throws to beat #2 Okie State 84-83 in ‘92
- Justice Thigpen’s tip-in on an in- bounds pass to beat Minnesota in the fall of ‘91, after the Gophers had turned it over by hitting the above score board on their own in-bounds pass.

OSU (Alexander?) guard missing 2 Ft's at end of game to give them the win.
Loudest I've ever heard in Hilton.

I would say the Double OT win over Kansas at Phog Allen Homan's senior year. ISU beat Kansas, the crowd, and the refs that game.

Boddiker From Texas missing 2 free throws with a second left a few years back, ISU beats #11 Texas 78-77. That is as loud as I have witnessed Hilton.

Hornacek's buzzer beater over Miami of Ohio and Ron Harper in the NCAA Tournament. Beating Michigan in the next round, I will never forget Elmer's dunk!

Justice Thigpen from half court on a last second shot to beat Colorado and stop our away from Hilton losing streak.

Horny buzzer beat against Ron Harper and Miami of Ohio.

Mayer scoring 300 points in 1 minute to beat OSU.

Boddacker (sp?) missing 2 free throws at the end of the Texas game in 2004. As a young'n (as in I wasn't around for the infamous OSU game) thats the loudest I've ever heard Hilton.

Besides all of the ones already mentioned John Neal hitting those 2 threes against Iowa was pretty cool. Also, I always liked Fizer stuffing Kenny Gregory's dunk attempt in Hilton. Jake Sullivan's loooong three against KU his freshman year.

Adding to the "loudest I've ever heard Hilton" comments...

My lifetime as a Cyclone fan, let alone a basketball fan, is limited to my time as a student here, but I still have witnessed my fair share of jaw-dropping moments at Hilton.

In 2004-05 when Texas Tech was visiting, the team was down early in the game to the Red Raiders 22-8. I don't know what caused Hilton to erupt, maybe it was just the fans trying to will the team back into the game, but the next basket made by ISU made the crowd erupt into a roar that had my ears ringing for the rest of the day. To me, that's the perfect example of Hilton Magic at its finest, where crowd noise brings a team back after being down by so much. Absolutely amazing.

A few others:

-Tinsley dribbling through the legs of the defender against Central Connecticut State in the NCAA first round in 2000.

-Taking UCLA behind the woodshed in the Sweet 16 that same year.

-Beating Texas in overtime in Austin 2 years ago, plus the OT game over No. 2 Kansas.

I was at the ISU-CU game with Justice Thigpen's buzzer beater in Boulder when Johnny Orr was still the coach...Still the best game I have ever witnessed.. I got tickets in the faculty/ big donor area where these people are wearing nice clothes/jewelry..Let's just say it was PRICELESS...HITMAN

Does anyone remember the game sullivan's frosh year when he was jacking up three's from just inside halfcourt nailed 2 or 3 in a row?

What about the pass from Tinsley to Rancik with .7 seconds left to win against Nebraska, where Rancik made the layup.
Kantrail and Tinsley jacking up threes from the spot on the floor where it said Hilton Colliseum and absolutley drilling them.
The whole 99-2000 team

All those were great-how about the birth of Hilton Magic-Barry Steven's free throw line jumper at the buzzer that stunned a highly ranked Missouri team in Johnny's second or third year-our first appearance on ESPN I do believe

My first ISU basketball game ever was ISU vs. #2 OSU when Hoiberg lit it up to lead us to the upset. I was 9 years old at the most and have lived for ISU basketball ever since. Just reading this list of great moments has put me in the mood to get this season started.

A few favorites of mine.

1. Fizer dunking over Mihm
2. Fizer hitting a turnaround jumper to beat Kansas at KU in 2000
3. Kantrail Horton hitting a 3 from WAY outside at KU in 2001. It wasn't a buzzer beater either. He just put it up because he wanted to. I was at that game and the KU fans were just floored.

Is it possible to get videos of any old games, specifically from the Hornacek era?

The problem with this is thread - I remember most of these and lots of others, but I cant remember the color of my wife's eyes, or when we met, or other "important" (her words) couple memories.
Good god lady, get off my back, we've only been married for 14 years, or is it 10. I dunno.
