Driftwood, Tx
My son and I are making the trek to Ames this Thursday. My son is a Senior in HS this year so we scheduled a campus tour on Saturday morning and then heading to the game to cheer on the Clones to a victory ... although my son is Longhorn fan - thats what I get for living near Austin, Tx for most of my son's life... any way, haven't been to Ames for almost 20 years and am sure things have changed quite a bit - besides Hickory Park - where are some good places to eat in and around Ames.. anything we have to try?

Dublin Bay is great and is near the stadium. I also went to Olde Main Brewery on Main Street last night for the first time in forever and it was great. The Cafe in north Ames is also good.

Our family walked through the Octagon Arts Festival on Main Street last weekend, and the scent of Great Plains all along downtown was killer. Unfortunately no one else in my family likes it, so I almost never get it.

Scallions in campus town is amazing, first class meal in a relaxed atmosphere. It's Korean.

You're right. Hickory Park hasn't changed, it's still over-rated.

Three MUSTS in Ames: Battles BBQ, is still better than any BBQ I've ever found in TX. Hickory Park is simply famous. And Great Plains Sauce & Dough is still awesome,

We're up for just about anything.... Sounds like Great Plains is a must... also, with it being Parent's weekend, I'm assuming that most places will fill up pretty quick?

Besides Hickory Park (duh), I'd second The Cafe and Dublin Bay.

You could also check out the Legends restaurant that is on the top floor of one of the apartment buildings. It's right on campus so the view is great. Food is not special (sorta like Applebee's) but the view of campus is sweet.

Pizza Pit-Standard pizzas but great and sandwiches

Fuji Steakhouse-Sushi and Hibachi, never had the Hibachi menu but the Sushi is good

Dublin Bay-Irish and British fare. Some interesting entrees Decent lounge area to watch games

Lucullans-Italian cafe menu.

Aunt Maudes-Higher end restaurant. Like their Prime Rib

Old Maine-little pricier than you would expect for a brew pub but nice take on some usual entrees.

Legends-Food is average but the view is worth it sitting on the top floor overlooking the campus

Black Market Pizza-some unique takes on some classics.

La Fuente-Solid Mexican, reasonably priced.
