pretty impressive seasons that both Adrian Peterson and Calvin Johnson are having this year. Do you think both get the records they're chasing?

I think Calvin Johnson will break Rice's record easily. He's something like 170 yards short. He might even do it next week. I can't see him not breaking it, barring injury. Detroit doesn't have a lot of other options, and Megatron is just too good to not get the ball.

I'm going to say that AP breaks 2000 yards, but doesn't get Dickerson's record, although as it stands, his season is pretty impressive anyway. His rushing yardage for the last 8 weeks is over 1300 yards. That's just insane. 1300 yards is a very good season for most NFL running backs, and generally will get you a pro bowl nod. He's done that in half a season. Incredible.

The impressive thing to me is that the Vikings have no other offensive weapons this year so all the D's are completely built to stop the run. Ponder is worthless so AP is their go-to guy. One has to think, though, if their QB was effective they probably wouldn't need AP to run that much. I think he gets 2000, locks up a future hall of fame bid, but him and the team fall short against HOU and GB.

Being a Packer fan, I hate when they have to play vs. these two guys, and both usually tear it up against them. But I would really like to see Peterson get his record.

I like Calvin Johnson and all but to me, it just seems like a different time in the NFL now. 3 guys went over 5000 yards last year alone, and previously there was Dan Marino (anybody else?) for how many years. It just seems like anymore, its not as big of deal to break passing/receiving records.

The main reason I want to see Peterson break Dickerson's record is it's one of those that people thought would never be touched because of how teams were set up nowadays. Although, you could make the argument that it is easier for him now with defenses totally geared towards stopping the pass.

It will be fun to watch either way.

The really baffling thing is that both of these teams still suck despite these potential record breaking seasons

I know this isn't how the NFL looks at it, but as far as I am concerned he needs to get to 2290 yards to have the best rushing season on record.

This. It's unbelievable that he's having the success he is on a team that is 100% 1 dimensional on offense. The Texans have a competent run defense though, so breaking the record will be difficult I think.

A healthy Percy Harvin makes a world of difference. Ponder is not that great, but he has absolutely no one to throw to. That's tough on a young qb. I'm guessing gets one more year as the starter. Hopefully they address the WR position this off season. I think guys like Danny Amendola, Mike Wallace, even Dwayne Bowe will be UFA's. Maybe they can entice one of them, or else address it in the draft.

asterisks for what?

I think it is a somewhat tongue in cheek reference to the "asterisk" for Roger Maris' homerun record as he had more games to get the record than the Babe did. For example, Peterson will still have gotten fewer yards per game than Simpson did in 1973 (2,003 in 14 games) unless he gets 2,290 yards in his 16 games, which isn't likely. Really, O.J.'s record should still stand above all of the other 2,000 yard rushers as they all had 16 games to do it and he surpassed them all in yards per game.

I have a feeling that regardless of the WR situation, that the Vikings will bring in an available veteran to back up Ponder. Then, if he struggles again, they have options.

that's true for both guys. The Lions are down to their 5 and 6th WRs, Pettigrew(TE) drops 4 balls per game but they target him 10+ per game and their running game is a bag of cats that needs to be thrown in the river. The most impressive thing to me, is that AP was getting his knee reconstructed a year ago at this time, simply amazing.

Not going to defend the Vikes as being a "good" team, but I wouldn't say they "suck" either. They're 8-6 overall, in the playoff chase (very unlikely they make it) and currently have a winning record in their division too.

They're definitely not good, but I would say they suck, either. Lions, on the other hand, suck!

Do they get asterisks? They should.

Well if your going to complain Peterson got to play more games. I'm going to complain Simpson got more carries per game. Right now Peterson has 43 less carries than Simpson had in his 2006 yard season. With the way petersons playing getting 194 yard on 43 carries should be attainable. He averaging 7.5 yards a carry his last 8 games.

AP deserves the MVP award this year imo
I swear I'm not biased, but I agree. What he's doing is incredible.

You can't say the Vikings suck when they currently hold a wild card spot and can still make the playoffs. I can appreciate a fan of another North team who would like to see AP break the record. The Rams have a solid D line and AP tore them apart. I definitely see him breaking 2000 and believe he can break Dickerson's record.

i HATED peterson when he was at oklahoma. i laughed my butt off when ISU broke his collarbone. now he is my favorite nfl player. go figure! i dont think he will get the record because the last 2 teams are tough but he will get to 2000 and hopefully get MVP. more importantly, i hope he gets us into the playoffs!!
