We just got back from Jamaica, where I tried curried goat for the first time. Not my favorite - tough and with soooo many bones. I love goat milk and cheese, but apparently not their meat.

What are some foods you've tried while traveling or out with friends that are out of your comfort zone? Or, what's the weirdest thing you've ever eaten?

New Jersey has a lot of cool diners, and scrapple is very popular in the State.
Scrapple is awful.

In Jamaica I had a lot of poached eggs and fish for breakfast, I loved it.
If you can find an island with conch, I love that ****.

I've eaten in plenty of diners in Jersey and have never heard of scrapple. All the diners I have eaten in are near NYC so maybe that makes a difference as opposed to the ones near Philly

My dad used to host a wild game feed every spring. Friends, family and customers would all bring game from the previous hunting season and prepare them their favorite way. Over the years I have tried snakes, bears, raccoons, fish, frogs, animals from almost every continent and body parts of animals that should not be eaten. The one thing I will never eat again is turtle of any kind. Was not a pleasant experience, kinda like eating chewy sand and dirt.
 
My dad used to hunt and fish and insisted we eat what he shot and caught. I loathe the disgusting greasy mess that is squirrel and not too fond of duck either. Not a fan of catfish. Not eating those unless it’s a matter of life or death and even then I might think 60+ years is enough.

Could be much more in the South Jersey. More Dutch in that area.
I'm not kidding, its like waffles and scrapple, eggs and scrapple, everywhere.

Outside of that I would think the riskiest thing I have eaten was frog legs

Mucky Duck in Ames has decent blood sausage. You should go there and order haggis.
 
There’s a famous market in Kyoto that has all kinds of weird delicacies. The one that I liked the most was marinated baby octopus stuffed with a quail egg. The grilled eel liver was quite good too. There was this “tea” that might have been urine though.

I had head cheese, treipen, cow tongue and ox tail growing up, and I occasionally had to wash it down with powdered milk. I've had Rocky Mountain oysters, shark fin soup (delicious, but I will never ethically do that again) and actually like kimchi quite a lot if prepared well. I've also eaten goat, lamb, pigeon, frog legs, rabbit and double-entendred beaver.

My taste buds are battle tested.
 
Hot take: New Orleans food is ******* horrible.

If by hot take you mean a dumpster fire of a comment, then yes.:jimlad: I do miss New Orleans food. Had frog legs a couple of times so that was interesting.


Had a friend who was first gen american (parents came over from China), and when she was living with us we got exposed toa wide variety of foods that I couldn't even read the label on. Also ended up grilling and eating chicken hearts.
 
Sea urchin at a sushi place in Denver. Apparently it's supposed to be yellow. Mine was a tad gray. Was sick for several days after. Horrible, awful, terrible.
