Shout-out to @MeanDean for the idea. It has a loose topical link to this year’s Academy Awards.

Rank your top 5 favorite music-based movies. List can include biopics, documentaries, musicals, films about fictional artists/bands and mocumentaries (if you wish, you can rank fictional flicks separately).

Numerous music-related films I still need to see. Many good ones that won't make my final cut.

I'm working on my list, will post it in a while.

Go!

My 5 -- omitted Beatles-related movies from my primary list. A lot of difficult decisions for my list.
1. Gimme Shelter
2. This Is Spinal Tap
3. The Buddy Holly Story
4. Woodstock
5. The Decline of Western Civilization (Part 1)
Runners-up: The Last Waltz; Sid and Nancy; The Doors; That Thing You Do!
Underrated: Head; All You Need is Cash; Coal Miner’s Daughter; You’re Gonna Miss Me (doc about Roky Erickson of The 13th Floor Elevators).

My 5: Beatles movies/documentaries
1. A Hard Day’s Night
2. Eight Days A Week
3. Help!
4. Anthology (TV movie)
5. Let it Be

Mr Hollands Opus: Damn movie makes me cry, particularly the Beautiful Boy moment. I'm actually getting misty just thinking about it.

Almost Famous: Just a great movie all around. I didn't see it right away but kept hearing good things about it. Finally watched it and loved it.

Oh, man... A loose, loose stab, in no order and with no research:

- A Hard Day's Night
- 8 Mile
- This Is Spinal Tap
- Saturday Night Fever
- Tommy (love for the music, enjoy for the kitsch)

These are two amazing ones.

Need to see A Hard Day's Night and a few others.

Saw one about Amy Winehouse and it made me appreciate her more, and pretty sad how it all turned out, but surround yourself with awful people, and awful things might happen.

Actually saw a doc on Lady Gaga last year and didn't come away with the same appreciation--might have actually been even more annoyed which was weird. Talented and all but basically just needs attention and affirmation. Dressing like food isn't artistic: it's stupid.

So I had to watch it, because apparently I need to cry today. Just makes me think about my boys and how much I love them.

1. This is Spinal Tap
2. Eight Mile
3. Amadeus
4. La Bamba
5. Great Balls of Fire

Just missed: Coal Miner's Daughter

I've seen parts of Ray, but never the whole thing. I loved what I saw, but I've never plopped down to watch the whole thing. I probably would have that up there had I watched the whole thing

Metallica's Some Kind of Monster was a gritty look into the band and the making of an album.

Shout out to Across the Universe. It probably doesn't qualify, but it's kind of a cool movie.

4 docs and one movie (I prefer documentaries):

1. Rush - Beyond The Lighted Stage
2. Hired Guns - documentary about session musicians
3. Kansas - Miracles Out of Nowhere
4. Now More Than Ever: The History of Chicago
5. My one movie - That Thing You Do! - never gets old
