For those people out there that were wondering a month ago which program was headed in a better direction, and which coach got more out of their players...I think the debate is over.
Iowa State - Fred Hoiberg
Coming off of one of our best seasons for the Cyclones in recent memory (23-12), it seemed as though things were on the up and up for Iowa State. Replacing the scoring of Tyrus Mcgee, Cory Lucious, Chris Babb, and Will Clyburn made most practical ISU fans realize that we would be taking a step back in year 4 of Hoiberg's tenure. 2013-2014 - Insert Deandre Kane, Dustin Hogue, Monte Morris, and Naz Long (sorry Matt Thomas), and the clones are not only better this year (24-7), but they get off to a 14-0 start and breeze their way to a certain #4 seed in the tournament or better. Get excited clone fans because we have a few guys named Nader, Mckay, and Custer coming next year and the Clones will looked primed to do more of the same.
Iowa - Fran Mcaffery
Iowa also came off of a strong season late in the year to finish at 9-9 in conference and with over 20 wins for the first time in a long time. They ended the regular season at 20-11 and breezed through the NIT with a "Championship Game" and a 25-13 record, the Hawks looked poised to make a run at the Big 10 in 2013. Returning all of their starters and an impressively deep team, Iowa started out the season hot. However, they ended the year on a 6 of 7 game losing streak ending the season with a record of 20-11. Sound familiar?
There may be a bit of a slanted point of view in this post, but the stats and records sort of speak for themselves. Next year does Iowa State again crack into the top 20, does Iowa get better losing Marble and Basabe? The only thing I do know is that Fred has proven time and time again that Iowa State basketball is on the rise, and we are in for a fun run while the Mayor is in town.
