Back in 1991, Hoiberg's Ames High beat Blake's Indianola to get to the state tournament. Granted Blake was a junior on that team, but IIRC, Hoiberg had more points at halftime than the entire Indianola team plus some highlight dunks and probably a triple-double.

The two of them went on to professional sports careers (Blake in the MLB) and today are matched up in the Principle Pro-Am. Do you think there is some trash talking going on there? I bet they are going at it.

I imagine them both saying, "hawks suck"!, and then high-fiving.

hoiberg and blake were such stud all-around athletes, its a shame you don't see that anymore in high school now that kids decide to specialize in a sport at age 9.

Completely agree. And, unfortunately, the college game almost demands this. I remember a basketball recruit under McD that decommitted because he was asked to just do bball and he wanted to do more.

There's a junior at Ankeny, Keeton McKinney, who could be one of those stud multi-sport athletes, but he chose to only play baseball. For good reason. He signed to play at Arkansas as a sophomore and is being watched closely by many MLB scouts. With his size (6' 5", about 230ish) and athleticism, he could've been a D-1 tight-end or d- or o-lineman. Can't say I blame him though ... while there's risk getting out of bed in the morning, I wouldn't want to risk a shot at the bigs because of a high school football or basketball injury.

i think its cool matt thomas decided to play on the golf team this spring. he'll be a basketball player full time in about 10 days, glad he's having fun with his buddies and trying to win a state championship.

Perhaps more importantly, from what I can see, both are and have been, good guys along the way. I went to school with Casey and he was quite nice to everyone and avoided the BMOC attitude that many get, even without actually being BMOC. It was nice to see him claw his way to the bigs and stick for a number of years.

When CB was a senior, he took them to the finals in Basketball and lost to an unconscious shooting Clinton team.

My brother was also pretty good at basketball and golf in HS. He had to quit golf half way through his senior year though because the travel to all the pre-draft showcases was too difficult. I wouldn't say it hurt his baseball carreer.

Dude it isn't the kids that decide to specialize it's the competition that drives it. Some phenomenal athletes, top 1 % or less, can handle more than one sport on talent alone. In a HS with 1000 kids 500 are boys and 5 start on basketball. If you aren't in the top 1 % for athleticism it takes skills to get you there. That's why the top 10-20% realize they have to work all year on sport.

He's also giving back like crazy to the community down here.

Fred had to bail after 14 holes to seal the deal with Kane

“He had a recruit in,” said former major league baseball standout Casey Blake of Indianola, who was paired with Hoiberg and former Masters and British Open champion Mark O’Meara. “I told him he had to get his priorities straight. We’ve got to win this thing.”
