Under Coach McCarney, when Iowa State switched from the helmets with the blue facemask to the helmets with the white facemask, did the helmet decal change in size (i.e. get smaller)?

I believe so. They also changed the paint on the shell around the same time or shortly thereafter. I believe around 2004 (???) they went from more of a flat red to a richer/deeper, almost metalic red that reminded me more of OU. I remember being on a facilities tour through the locker room and seeing one of the new shells up close. You could really see the difference.

I think the decals are about the same, but I will look through my gamers. However, at some point the decals went from red to clear...showing the helmet red through to where the red on the decal used to be. Also, the helmet paint changed from a flat red in 1995, to a sparkly red around 1999, to a brighter metalic red around 2004.

I think these were your coolest helmets ever...

They should have stuck with these.

Here is the 2000 helmet. Bought it from the athletic department the next spring. It's got #6 inside so I have always assumed it was Billup's helmet. The red does have some flake in it.
