Firing Rhoads Question

We all know what SHOULD happen. However, won't this ultimately come down to the large donors?

I'm not sure how the buyout works....do we already have that money or is this something the large donors will have to pony up and then pony up money for a new contract for a new coach?
 
Maybe. But mostly it will eat into cash reserves. So will continuing to field 2-3 win football teams.
 
Producing the money isn't a problem, but is a damper on cash reserves. And morale related to the program.
 
Even if we do have the money, I would think Pollard will try and get donors to pay for as much of it as possible.

And why not.
 
Also, the next coach we bring here won't cost much in terms of contract money unless we're buying somebody successful from a successful program [which we're not]. If we buy someone up from G5 or a relatively young/new assistant, we'd be looking at a fairly inexpensive contract compared to Rhoads's.
 
If you look at the last BORegents statement our AD breaks even every year but I think that's published that way. I find it and to believe that we don't have millions stashed away now that we are making $20mil more a year with the new tv contract fully kicked in.

I wouldn't expect big donors to pony up millions to fire someone after giving millions for the SEZ. I could see JP going to Leath and saying "hey if u want me to fire him you're going to have to help me out here".
 
Per some sources around here it is rumored that Leath said something to the effect he could snap his fingers and get the money for anything that he wants.

Can university money so easily be used for athletic purposes?

Would that have to go through the Board of Regends etc. where a justification would have to be made about why 4 million dollars of university money is going to firing a football coach rather than for for research and education related purposes?
 
He is fighting for his job, lets just leave it at that, I think he needs at least 3 more wins.
 
I don't know the full details of everything and won't claim to. But according to a family member that is decent sized donor (not big enough to have anything named after) a core group of donors are reaching out to others. I will let everyone decide for themselves what that means.

??? I think the moral of the story here is that while we think there are a lot of "big" donors to the athletic dept., there are many, many, many more 'big" donors that are just donors to the university and not specifically the AD and if Leath needed their help to make something happen in the AD that he felt strongly about that it wouldn't be a problem because of the support he has.

This is largely true. However, much of that 20 million is already spent.

So you want to go cheaper than the 9th lowest paid coach in a 10-team conference? Seems like a recipe for success.
 
I'm still not sold on the idea that Rhoads isn't our guy. It's not like he's not learning, and he's certainly an intelligent guy with a high capability of learning. This team might just be starting to blossom into something good. Let's see how they play this week versus Texas.

Why do people continually say this? Do people really think our AD will keep a coach that has won 2, 3, and 2 (so far) games in the last 3 years? That would set the program back and JP isn't going to do that.

Pollard may not WANT to fire Rhoads but he won't have much of a choice if this year continues to go as poorly as it has.
 
Rhoads' buyout is a lump sum of $750,000 per season remaining on his contract plus $300,000 payable in 2018. So if he were fired at the end of this season, we'd need to cut him a check for $4.5 million. I think that would put some strain on what is the 10th-largest athletic budget in the Big 12 without significant donor support.
