I need to find a "go-to" golf course in the Des Moines area. Any suggestions?

I'm not the $50+ green fee type golfer, but at the same time I want more than a field of brown grass with a hole in the ground.

Any advice on where to try and places not to bother would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I've always enjoyed Grandview. It's a shorter course but it's fun to play and they take good care of the greens and fairways.

I noticed they have very cheap college student rates as well. As long as the course is in decent shape I've gotta give it a try. Thanks.

I think Otter Creek in Ankeny is good for the money. Kept well, easy to play, but nicely laid out. I haven't played there in like 6-8 years though, so I don't know how it is now.

River Valley in Adel, on Tuesdays $25 for a cart and all you can golf. Decent course to boot.

Fridays after 4 at Beaver Creek have the same sort of deal and they have 27 holes to choose from.

Waveland during the day (M-Thu) is great.

Jester is high on my list also.

we don't know yet either...should be open again this year!

Rolling Hills just south of Norwalk. It's only 9 holes....but it's an awesome course--like a mini-Waveland. Definitely challenging.

Jester Park is my fav. but probably cause i go there the most. Pretty reasonable and its fairly close. Grandview is/used to be dirt cheap,$8 for 9 holes during the week.

Don't forget Blank on the southside. It gets overlooked, but it is a nice, challenging course.
This is my go-to public course. It's very reasonable, has a great variety of holes, and isn't usually too horribly busy except on the weekends.

I don't mind playing Willow Creek either, but it's generally a pretty vanilla course, IMO. The nice thing is since they have 2 9s and an 18, it's generally easy to get out.

Jester is a great deal, generally.

Grandview is about as cheap as golf gets. Be sure to wear a hardhat if you play it. The holes all run right side-by-side, and let's just say that the don't-want-to-fork-over-a-lot-of-money-to-play-a-game-they-aren't-very-good-at crowd tend to end up there. It's actually a pretty decent course, though. It's just really old and very short.

That being said, you can play 9 holes there for 6 bucks during the week if you have a college or military ID, and you can play all 18 for only 3.75 more. That's mini golf prices.

I like AH Blank a little better because it's a much nicer course and doesn't cost THAT much more.

Waveland! Oldest 18 hole golf course in the US west of the Mississippi. Beautiful with very reasonable rates. Very hilly, so you might not want to walk.

Terracce Hills out on the east edge of Altoona is a pretty good deal as well. It is not as challenging as Legacy or Waveland but it is a little longer than Grandview and has a nice mix of tight fairways and wide open grip it and rip it holes.

Speed of play is pretty good, tee times are easily available, and they run some good deals...

Copper Creek in Pleasant Hill needs to be mentioned. Some holes with the entire distance from tee to green lined with trees. They were cut out of a forest. You're either in the fairway or playing among the squirrels.
