Greatest store ever.....but

Do you tip the kids who walk your groceries to the car?

I have always wanted to but never have. Need some help from my CF friends.

Thanks!

They won't take a tip. Not supposed to anyway.

Correct. They should, however, make polite conversation with you. One time a (new) young guy wouldn't stop talking. From the time he came to my line and started sacking the groceries to when he was wheeling the cart back in the store.

When I was in High School working at Hy-Vee they told us to never take tips but I snuck in a few when it was 20 below and I was standing outside for 2 hours at a time. Not many people offered though.

I tip when I have some cash. Those kids dont make much and honestly its nice that they take your stuff out the car. I worked 5 years at a grocery store and tips were always a nice reward your efforts. Its amazing who would give them out though. The wealthier snobs would tend to ignore you altogether on your way out there. They would get in their car, pop the trunk and not even say thank you. But you would get the average joe and he would tend to tip or at least be very appreciative.

I like Fareway. They dont have the best selection, but the prices are reasonable and the produce tends to be a little better. Meat counter rocks.

I once got a $10 tip from a guy in a Cadillac who said that I was the only person who ever loaded his groceries that didn't slam his trunk. Back then the Cadillac's were one of the few cars that had the trunks that would auto-close. Being a car nut of course I knew this.

As a former carry-out boy for Fareway. Most posters are correct, you are not "supposed" to take tips. Very rarely were they offered to me but in the rare occasion I did take them and never got in trouble. I didnt exactly broadcast it either. It was usually a buck or two but hey when you are in highschool every little bit helps.

This- I remember from my time at Fareway the people who drove Caddys were as adimant about not slamming the trunk as the old ladies were about not smashing their bread.

It was always a game for me to try to guess what the person would be driving (based on apperance. . .I know I know sterotyping is wrong but it was fun) and what the inside/trunk of the car would have in it.

Its amazing how much crap some people drive around with in their cars. And it wasnt like they were just hauling it that day, most of the people were repeat customers and I swear some of theat stuff was in there the entire 4 yrs that I worked @ Fareway.

On a related note, who else do you tip? Do you tip your barber, dog groomer, things like that. I don't but my wife does. We have a service business and I don't expect tips. If I wanted more money I would change for it and that's my thought process on servie type jobs. I will tip waitress, bartender, etc

I used to do price comparisons in the Des Moines area for Hy-Vee and if you stick in the aisles (not deli, bakery, etc) all the stores are VERY close in price overall. Were talking $1 or $2 per $100 and it can go either way. With that being said, Dahls was most expensive, then Hy-Vee, and Fareway was usually the cheapest but it really depended on what you bought. Also found that many of the the Fareways were also the dirtiest.

I don't think I have ever tipped the dog groomer. I usually tip the person who cuts my hair $2.00. I used to tip the paper carrier when I got the paper delivered.

Absolutely. HyVee will have some sales, but I bet if you randomly pick 50 different food items, Fareway will beat them on at least 40.

Fareway here (Marion) generally price-matches Hy-Vee sales -- if generic Hy-Vee orange juice is on sale, you'll see the same size Fareway orange juice on sale for the same price, etc. I don't know if that's true everywhere. In Marion, Hy-Vee and Fareway are a block apart.

Fareway is awesome.

I tip the hotel receptionists in Vegas just so they'll upgrade my room.

We only have 1 grocercy store in Tama/Toledo and it's Fareway. They will price match HyVee of Marshalltown. The Fareway here in town is very nice and has things priced better than HyVee of Marshalltown.

I'm a tight *** so I try to avoid tipping when possible. That said when I go to a restaraunt I tip very well if the service is ok.

I do not tip cabbies (on the rare occasion that I ride in one) much if any. Those shuttle bus drivers at the airport=no tip.
It pisses me off to see tip jars nearly everywhere you go anymore from subway to starbucks. I realize that these people dont make alot of money and the high prices for the products are not going in the employee's pockets (directly anyway) but c'mon if you are not making enough money go get a freakin hair cut, put down your cell phone for more than two seconds at a time and get a job somewhere else.

I also hate tip jars at wedding receptions. They had a tip jar at my wedding reception and I had them take it down. We had an open bar all night and we were already tipping them plenty. I didn't want my guests to pay anything.
