Anaheim Ducks - Recap: Anaheim @ Los Angeles - 01/08/2009
LOS ANGELES – Bobby Ryan did everything he could on his own for the Ducks, but in the end it wasn’t quite enough.
Ryan’s natural hat trick, a Ducks rookie record for goals in a game, was wasted in a 4-3 loss to the Kings in front of a sellout crowd of 18,118 at Staples Center. Ryan scored three times in a span of 2:21 (fastest in team history) from the end of the second period to the beginning of the third to bring the Ducks all the way back from a 3-0 deficit. But a power play goal by Alexander Frolov with 12:17 left in the game gave the Kings a lead they held the rest of the way.
"It's a tough defeat when you have a good night when everybody's not going as well as they'd like to," Ryan said. "We got behind the eight ball early and gave them too many opportunities. We didn't deserve the two points tonight."
Ryan's three goals in 2:21 were the fastest in team history and set a Ducks rookie record for goals in the game.
Ryan’s third goal of the game, 1:35 into the third, was one that will be played on highlight reels for a very long time. Skating down the left wing with pressure from defenseman Peter Harrold, Ryan made a spin move that left Harrold in his wake before deking around goalie Jonathan Quick and depositing the puck into the wide open net. Ryan jumped into the glass before hats rained down to the ice from Ducks fans in the building.
Before that, Ryan punched in a rebound goal just 16 seconds into the period, after Ryan Carter’s shot got underneath and behind Quick, and Ryan skated around him to poke it home.
Ryan came through with Anaheim’s first goal of the game on the power play with 46 seconds left in the second period, after the Ducks had looked mostly lethargic up to that point. He took a pass from Ryan Getzlaf low in the left wing faceoff circle and sent it under Quick’s skate.
