who would you start with?

Each year, Obion County residents must pay $75 if they want fire protection from the city of South Fulton. But the Cranicks did not pay.
The mayor said if homeowners don't pay, they're out of luck.

seems like it's pretty clear that the family, for whatever reason, didn't pay the yearly protection fee, which I have no idea why you would have to pay to begin with.

Would you also demand an insurance company pay for your new house, despite not having a policy or paying any premiums? This guy lived outside of city limits, so does not pay city property taxes, and refused to pay the reasonable amount (75$) to have the city's fire department cover his property. He has only himself to blame.

Why is this fee optional? Maybe they have a fee for using the police too?

At some point there had to have been legislation to make this an optional service. Whoever passed that is a complete idiot.

That being said, even if it's optional, WHY WOULD YOU NOT PAY IT?

Yeah, sounds like they made the choice to not pay, until they needed it of course.

To be fair, $75 / year seems to be a small price to pay compared to the value of the home... and he did not choose to pay for htat protection

though I'd still be pretty ******

It's pretty clearly stated in the article:

"Anybody that's not in the city of South Fulton, it's a service we offer, either they accept it or they don't," Mayor David Crocker said.

Kind of funny that they put it out when it hit the neighbors house, I picture them all standing with the hose out waiting for it to touch the neighbors house.

Because he didn't live in the city limits where his property taxes would cover such a service?

I love how people expect to get help when they don't pay for it. Sounds pretty clear that they knew they weren't paying the service fee but just figured they'd get help if they needed it.....It's definitely pretty cruel that they didn't put the fire out but if they did then everyone would stop paying the fee and the fire department is broke.

It's the same as insurance though. Why not just make it mandatory?

and yes, it's the dude's own fault for not accepting it.

I'll bet the next day the City Clerk's office was swamped with people paying their fire department service fee.

fire service isnt 'insurance'... its typically one of he basic functions of local government, as it should be.

and the homeowner said they'd pay any amount necessary. at that point the fire department shouldve come out, and sent them a bill for $75 or an appropriately adjusted amount for not paying for the service in advance. Not just done nothing

Thats crazy that the county has optional fire protection that you pay a fee for (probably has really low property or sales taxes so they don't pay for Fire dept with them) but I love the fact that they were too cheap to pay their $75 and they let it burn! Hilarious. Screw fire protection its not worth $75!

Because the city doesn't have any jurisdiction over people who live outside of it's limits? Now maybe the county could require that all residents have some kind of fire protection...but I'm sure then they would clamor that their rights were being infringed upon.

Cities usually only have jurisdiction within their city limits. They were offering the service to those outside the city limits. They do not have the jurisdiction to make it mandatory. The county could have, though...

I understand that, that's my point though. just make it mandatory countywide.
