ESPN Way to Early Top 25

ESPN has a huge hard on for Caitlin Clark.

Phenomenal player don’t get me wrong, but man it’s annoying.
That they do, but it is no different than the attention that other top players get on the various other teams. They don't spare the complements for Ashley, although a far cry from the Caitlin love. I, for one, am pretty happy with the attention the state of Iowa gets for women's basketball...a nice problem to have...and look forward to a fantastic year ahead for the ladies in cardinal and gold.

Clark = Murray

Stat stuffer that looks good on highlights, which is what ESPN cares about. But they don't help their team win. They are a defensive liability and if you run 75% of your offense through one person, it's a recipe for an early exit in the tournament.

I blame most of what we see with Clark on her coach. We’ve seen it happen at ISU as well when we have "one" superstar on the team. I’d love to see Clark on a team where she was surrounded by other good players….say like at ISU. With a good coach she could be a keystone for a national title contender.

I mean - Clark is pretty clearly a phenomenal player. Same with someone like Garza. Don't let the rivalry blind you - she is a great player. Doesn't mean I wish success for her on the court.

I think Iowa per capita has the best women's college basketball in the country. Four great programs that win at a high level and tons and tons of Iowa natives on the rosters at all four.

Absolutely something that should be celebrated more than it is.

I have to believe if Paige Bueckers was healthy all year, the ESPN coverage would have been different.

Paige missed all but one Big East game and all of their prime non-conference games on ESPN/ESPN2/ABC/FOX (Georgia Tech, UCLA, Louisville, Oregon, and Tennessee) during the regular season. Because Paige was out until 2/27, Clark played the entire Big 10 season without having comparisons to Paige, so we heard a lot about her.

Let's see how things change this coming year with a healthy Paige, plus Aliyah Boston as the reigning national player of the year. Clark could be the third fiddle.

I think Murray is the definition of an efficient player at college level, and they didn’t have to run plays for him to produce. Not a chucker at all. The game comes easy to him so hard to tell if he is “soft”, next level with better defense and better athletes will tell us answer.

Not as big a fan of wbb but the times I have seen Clark she seems like a bit of a chucker.

I figured since this was posted here recently it was written within last few days. Seemed weird for Maryland to be so high with all the losses they have had but this was written almost 3 weeks ago.

As far as Caitlin Clark goes and comments about being a chucker, here is how her stats have changed year over year.

  • Her FG% dropped from .472 to .452 mostly because...
  • Her 3% dropped significantly from .406 to .332
  • Her FT% increased from .858 to .881
  • Her scoring went up marginally from 26.6 to 27.0 but she averaged one more shot a game to get there.
  • Her rebounds went up from 5.9 to 8.0
  • Her assists went up from 7.0 to 8.0
  • Her steals went up from 1.3 to 1.5
  • Her blocks went up from 0.5 to 0.6
  • Her turnovers stayed constant at 4.8
  • Her A/TO ratio went up marginally from 1.47 to 1.69. Still not good for a lead guard.
  • Her minutes went up from 34 to 35.9

Yeah, from what I saw of the Iowa men, especially in the tournament, their bigger problem was that they didn't run things through him enough. So if the defense was making an effort to deny him the ball, like with Richmond at times, he could become a non-factor.

My favorite comparison for Clark is Trae Young in his one season at Oklahoma. It obviously takes a great player to be doing things at that volume with even average efficiency. But both she and Young are/were so ball-dominant that sometimes it doesn't seem like it's really helping the team all that much. And if it's an off day shooting, then there aren't really any other options.

I call a chucker a player who is getting shots up regardless of how they are defended and regardless of situation in game. There are times it makes sense. I wish Brockington would have been more of a chucker this year in at least a dozen games. Certain years with certain teams it made sense for James Harden to be a chucker but right now on a champion contender with maybe the 2nd or 3rd best player in the world on his team he’s taking better shots. The 3pt% drop you showed is probably just giving up on running offense and “chucking” a 3, not that she’s actually a worse 3pt shooter if she took good shots in flow of offense.

I probably saw 3 Iowa games and 12 ISU games the past year or two. Seems like Clark gets her shots up regardless of situation, I can’t tell if the rest of her team is bad enough for that to be a winning formula. Joens gets her shots up too but it seems more in the flow of the game. I wouldn’t compare either of them to Keegan Murray (since it’s become a bit of a rivalry thread) in terms of being a chucker because he had many games where he scored a lot because he barely missed a shot and often didn’t even take many shots to get 20+.
