ESPN Recap?

Seems pretty fair and objective to me. What from the Associated Press recap do you take issue with?

Full clip wouldn't play for me but did they show anything from DM getting tackled into the deep sideline? All I saw was him getting into the scrum, which is a bad look.

I guess I should have clarified. I felt they completely downplayed the whole fight scene. Seemed to me like it was written to pin it on us/DM and that's NOT how it played out.

I think the nation can agree that DM was was provoked. It is escalated because he is a game changing type of player. No-one will every fault a man for fighting back. On a personal note I am sad that the only game I can get to this year is in Austin and my favorite payer will miss the 1st half. We still win.

"The Cyclones and Bears nearly came to blows when a previous play ended up spilling over onto Iowa State's bench. The bad blood hung around, and the teams nearly staged a full-on brawl during a wild incident that included Roberts slapping Montgomery on the helmet, and Montgomery swinging away in response."

I understand your frustration with that.

A) Previous play was actually Montgomery getting tackled through a table.

B) Roberts didn't "slap him on the helmet" - he punched him over an official.

C) Montgomery didn't "swing away in response" - he charged him but didn't really throw a punch, he actually got punched again

End of the day, we had more players trying to hold each other back than become aggressors. Really proud of the restraint they showed for as bad as that could have turned.

I was referring to the written recap article on the ESPN. The recap video just shows the play in which the fight takes place.

While the out-of-bounds play against Montgomery is what raised tensions, it cannot be a justification for what Butler did to #21 (what ultimately escalated the fighting).

I found the articles focusing on Montgomery’s disqualification and not providing more context more apt articles of poor reporting. Mitch Sherman’s ESPN article being one of them.

Butler didn’t do anything out of the ordinary. Pancaked his man and held him down. When he went to get up, the guy hooked his legs.

Sorry, but if you are Butler once you get #21 to the ground you have to let him go. You don’t reposition to put your knees into another player’s chest or throat.

Edit: I don’t quite see the Butler’s legs getting hooked to point where he could have NOT released himself from #21 either.

Sure, I love seeing a player defend a teammate, but I have high character expectations for ISU and they lost their composure a bit.

It actually was a slap by Roberts, and Montgomery did throw a punch.

What are you watching where Butler isn’t held down?

If you can't see the guy hooking Butler's legs I just don't know what to tell you. I'm sure Butler was jawing at him, because I've heard he can talk some mad smack, but that's football. Montgomery getting flagged for that 'punch' is weak sauce and that POS from Baylor who swung on him multiple times, through restraint of officials and other players needs a far harsher consequence. He was involved in the Butler scrum as well, the only reason he was in Montgomery's grill is because David pulled him off the pile which had already gone far FAR over the edge. **** Baylor.

Sure, #21 is trying “sell” the penalty on Butler by holding his leg, but you are going to believe that Butler couldn’t release from that? Did you see Butler manhandle the Kansas defender last week? Butler seems to engage and commit his body weight/knees into the Baylor player more after being held and hooked down.

I don’t know how you guys don’t think you’re seeing Monty swinging. It’s a full on swing. And one I don’t think I’d want to be in front of, because it looks like he’s got quite a haymaker.

I see the Baylor guy throw a punch (not a slap) over the official. Then Montgomery charges him, arms kind of already out before he gets to him, but he could have thrown a bit of a punch (def not a haymaker). Then the Baylor guy throws another punch at him.

Again, it'd be ideal if he could have just walked away, but hard to do after you've just been punched..

I think it is a lunge/shove. I think the biggest factor for me is the officials failing to protect him. He gets shoved out of bounds into the Gatorade cart and then he gets punched from around an official.

It’s very much a slap, then Monty runs around the ref and as he swings with his right into the body, the Baylor player swings with his left at Monty’s head.

Go back to Waco

Open hand vs closed hand I don’t think is relevant. I still think Montgomery lunges and the second swing by the Baylor player makes it look like a punch as he tries to duck the punch.
