I was just listening to him going on about this on the Jim Rome show and I couldn't stand it any longer. Not that I completely disagree with everything he says, but ESPN is not solely to blame. I'm not a ESPN apologist, but fox and cbs and every other sports media is just as much to blame.
I agree, but ESPN is clearly at the forefront of it. The other networks just mostly carry games. It's ESPN that does the 24/7 365 hype. Step back for a minute and imagine the world without ESPN for a minute (might be hard for anyone under 25 or so).
Can't the same be said about CNN, MSNBC, Fox News as far as the world, the stock market, etc are concerned?

For a couple years in college, I would watch SportsCenter every morning. Eventually I figured out that I would never hear anything about an individual or team other than the Red Sox, Yankess, Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds, Terrell Owens, the Patriots, or Tiger Woods.
I only ever watch ESPN when certain games are televised, otherwise it's just a big waste of time.

Great article. I would also add that ESPN has demonstrated a lack of journalistic integrity when not reporting in-depth enough on the troubles at Penn State, the University of Iowa, the University of Washington (Jerramy Stevens), and the University of Southern California (Reggie Bush and family receiving $300,000). Instead, College Gameday is void of a soul. Instead of reporting the whole truth they have done nothing but positive stories on all of these programs with the exception of the University of Washington because they aren’t winning.
Sorry but without ESPN sports wouldn't be what they are today. And anyone who doesn't think that is just crazy.
Yeah, CGD is becoming similar to the Olympics...a bunch of pre-packaged stories meant to make fans feel good. When they didn't even mention ISU during the story on the Parkersburg tornado, that was the last straw for me.
Making the LeBron story such a big deal when he can't even go to NY until 2010 as well as the Lawrence Tynes brother situation are 2 current stories they really should have just left alone. They are meaningless and not worth the attention they are getting.
I love everything about ESPN, where else can I watch sporting events EVERY night, last night I got Ball State vs Western Michigan football & UNC vs Oregon , KU vs Syracuse bball. I am 25 and I am glad I didnt have to live without it, I dont care if a Heisman winner might be overhyped. I got to watch Davis last night and realized he should not be a Heisman candidate.
Yeah, I found that to be rather irritating, too. We sent just as many players and coaches up there and did just as much work, as did other high schools in the state. But for some reason none of that mattered as it would have intruded on the sanctity and benevolence of Iowa's actions.
I've been saying for years that the Heisman trophy isn't about the best player in college football. It's an MVP trophy for a BCS team.
ESPN unfortunately is just another casualty of the MTV generation. They feel (They being the commentators, anchors, and sideline reporters) that they have become more important than the game. You're not tuning in to see Oklahoma play Texas, you are tuning in to see ESPN cover the OU - Texas game. the worst part is, a lot of people buy into it. I rarely tune in to any pre game coverage at all anymore. And half the time, I hit the mute button during the games. I don't care how "you" did it when you played. Tell me something insightful about this game, or shut up.

I was actually just about to bring this up. why is it necessary to speculate over LeBron possibly going to NY when he isnt even a free agent for 20 months. Seriously. I mean, I know a lot of you guys don't like soccer, but there were a bunch of champion's league soccer matches yesterday that received about a minute and a half of coverage. :skeptical:
