Interesting read on Brock. Not behind a paywall.

Brock talks about his last 2 years at ISU which echos what many people suspected…he/the staff was overthinking things.

The rest of Purdy's time in Ames didn't go how he had hoped despite continued success for the team. His freewheeling approach that led to an average yards per pass attempt of 10.2 and 8.4 his first two years declined to 7.5 and 7.8 as a junior and senior.

"I became sort of a head case in terms of not playing the convicted way that I had before," Purdy said. "I was more about what other people thought of me. I feel like I sort of just played not myself. I was just playing quarterback in the wrong state of mind."

It's never been said explicitly, but I think we all knew this.

Purdy doesn't say it, and he's just being his humble self and putting the blame on his shoulders, but the offensive coaching staff is responsible for a lot of the offensive problems, especially his senior year. That's why most of them aren't here any more.

Yeah, he doesn't say that the staff was the problem and that's kind a jerk move to assume it.

Jerk move? We all watched the games. Do you think the staff put Purdy in a position to leverage his skillset? He was basically told not to run anymore.

It’s seems unlikely he was great for 2 years, regressed for 2, and then became an NFL MVP within the next 2…and that was all Purdy’s fault.

The post insinuated he said it was the staff. If you want to talk about your opinion, fine. But don’t put words in other people’s mouths.

That's all fine and dandy, it's just not in the article.

So the staff told him not to run anymore? Was that a problem? I mean we had no backup, Dekkers wasn’t good.

What a terrible idea to want him to sit in the pocket and progress through his reads, protect his health etc. I mean why would any coaches want him to do that?

It's more to do with the benefit of hindsight, Brock understand now all the things you need to do to improve at that position.

He isn't saying ISU did him wrong in any way, just that there's a lot more to excelling at the position than he thought at the time.

My read of it any way.

The seniors on that 2021 team admitted that they didn't handle the expectations very well that year and played very tight. The coaches also struggled with their game plan as well (3 tight end sets, trying to be a power running team). The defense that season also had some clunkers as well.

It's no coincidence the year Manning was with the Colts in 2018 was Brock's freshman year which also happened to be his best year for passer rating and average yards at ISU too. We didn't really have an OC that season so I think Campbell was kind of the one that called most of the plays but we also had Golesh and Scheelhaase on staff too that I would guess was part of the "OC by committee" approach that season.

I have no doubt we held him back a bit because of the type of plays Manning likes to run. We even saw it a bit early on this year with how they handled Rocco until they finally opened up the playbook more for him. He still doesn't scramble/run a lot in the 49ers offense either but he definitely has improved on his mechanics and ability to throw it deep along with his velocity. He worked with a throwing coach before the draft which there were some articles like this one last year that talked about that: 49ers news: How Brock Purdy’s work with his throwing coach, Will Hewlett, transformed his game - Niners Nation

Reads to me me like the focus was so strong on eliminating mistakes and risk, they lost the explosiveness and playmaking. That's kind of also how I remember what it looked like.

But yeah, Brock isn't going to lay an ounce of that on anyone but himself. And if CMC talked about it, I bet he would probably say something similar, and take all the blame on himself and the coaching staff.
