ESPN Article about wrestling in the State of Iowa

Good article. Would have been cool to mention more about the High School wrestling too and the tourney in Des Moines. The number of people and how quickly it sells out is almost Duke/Coach K basketball-esque.

Too bad it features mostly Hawkeye stuff.

In all fairness Iowa has been DOMINANT when it comes to wrestling. ISU has been good but no where near the level of Iowa since Gable took over.

ISU has had some great wrestlers, the two greatest of all time IMO but Gables legacy is more for his dominance in coaching than as a wrestler even though he was a 3X NCAA champ and a runner up.

Its awesome as a former HS wrestler to see the vast history behind the sport. I knew some of these facts but didnt realize how many Iowans (either residents or wrestlers) there were involved in the college ranks that have ties back the either the state or one of the two big programs.

Hard to blame them. Iowa has won, what, 12 or 14 national titles since our last one? Gable is the centerpiece of the article and there's no debate where his loyalties lie.

All that said it was a well written article and it's nice to have some exposure for the sport. I do wish they would have gotten some quotes from the in-state kids.

They had a seperate article today (linked from that article) about the impact of MMA on Wrestling. That one was entirely about Jackson, as he has some MMA experience in his background.

He was only a 2x Champ.

Very well written article. I agree, Iowa has been dominate so they deserve the amount of coverage they got. I also agree that I wish they would have touched on the high school tournament as well. I went this year for the first time in like 4 or 5 years and still got the chills when I heard "Gentlemen Please Clear The Mats."

Although its hard to like Brands, it makes me think that we really don't want UI to drop off in its abilities in the sport, we just want ISU right up there battling with them for that national title every year. That would be the best scenario for the state and its wrestling tradition.

ISU really needs to get back on top. To compete with Iowa year in year out. If it means taking a Gable guy so be it. Iowa took a Nichols guy and built their program that way, maybe its time we return the favor.

Great read. I'm not nearly as in to wrestling as I am basketball, but I definitely recognize and appreciate the close bond between the state and the sport. This truly is the wrestling state. Iowa, Iowa State, and Cornell are three of the top schools in the country every year.

I honestly didn't know just how deeply entrenched we are (and by "we", I mean both Iowa and ISU) across the country. It's crazy how many of the top schools have ties to either Iowa or ISU.
