Eddie Murphy close to doing stand up

Delirious and Raw helped me expand my language. My friends grew up repeating his routine.

I'm a bit skeptical of him returning to the stage, though. His delivery will not translate as well 30+ years later. There are a few comedians that can pull it off that style now, but the content still has to be there and the timing has to be right.

I'll likely check it out, but I'll also be going in with tempered expectations.

I watched Raw recently, and there is no way in hell he'd get away with that today.

Funny as all hell, but just blows right past the bounds of political correctness.

He can. I mean Bill Burr does, Jeselnick does. Comedians can get away with much more than normal stiffs. If he doesn't go politically uncorrect it will fail.

I saw Chris Rock randomly at the Comedy Store earlier this year, he showed up unannounced and asked if he could work on his material. He was up there for about 50 minutes and don't think I could count the amount of times he said "nope can't do that one, y'all would have my head on a spike if I said anything "bad" about them" ... etc. etc.

It was really interesting watching him do more of a practice run than the polished set because you could get an idea of their thoughts on a joke, whether it hit or missed, what is hot button. And how you can tell it has changed since he made it big in stand up.

He did a joke about abortion that I was dying at, but half the room was cringing, and after wards he addressed the audience and said, see, "these people understand a joke" the rest of yall thinking you're too good, even if you smiled, you thought that was funny. Just stop it." and that got a good laugh.

It would be a lot of fun to spend a night or two at the Store. It's crazy to me how many A list stand ups just show up there 4-5 nights a week to practice and polish their material.

Tbh my buddy who lives in LA kept on saying "dude, its a free show but big time comedians show up all the time" and I just didn't believe him. The week leading up to when we went he mentioned some that showed up unannounced and the biggest name was Chris Delia, which would have been cool to see but never expected a name as big as Chris Rock to show up. Even the MC was like "guys, this is a big one" before presenting him lol.

But to your point, yeah it was awesome. I found it almost as enjoyable just to watch them work through their sets.

Hope he stays out of politics. Yeah I worry a little that he won't get his grove back because he lives in a mansion and has a good life.

I watched the most recent Wanda Sykes Netflix routine.

Believe me, Eddie Murphy can get away with it

Bill Burr did a show at Stephens.
(Paraphrasing) He goes “So I flew into Des Moines and drove up and get off on this Elwood exit and drive by the stadium, hang a left, drive by the arena, hang a right, and pull into this auditorium. Holy ****, did you guys get one big ******* deal on concrete or what?”

I was so sad when he was unable to do Veishea while I was in school.

He did a bit about Bill Cosby when he was accepting the Mark Twain prize, so I don’t think he’d hold back.
