In a freak/fluke accident a couple days ago I have broken a finger. It's not the first time I've broken a finger, but it's the first time it's done this after doing so. I can bend it back straight but it won't stay there and goes back to this 90-degree. I can make a fist, but when I unfold it it goes back to this. I've had it in a metal/foam splint for a couple of days, but no change.

For those who've snapped a digit before... will it go back to normal?

PS - as a side note there is surprisingly little/no pain now.

Have you had an x-ray to confirm fracture?

Could also be a torn tendon/ligament.

Have it checked out by a doctor. Three of your four fingers are not good-it may be a tendon problem.

EDIT: CloneFanInKC-I see that you and I are thinking along the same lines.

If you look at your hand from a top view is there any crook diagonally?

Kind of looks like what you do when you are double jointed. My Mom always told my sister and I to stop doing that, it will get stuck, when we would bend fingers and toes in odd ways. Of course it wouldn’t but we freaked her out.

Basketball coach yanked a couple of my jammed fingers in basketball. X-ray when I was in college indicated two of those were breaks, one was probably dislocated. This kind of looks dislocated but hard to remember, been over 40 years. My fingers all eventually healed but I feel like I have some arthritis in only those fingers now. Middle three on right hand.

I would get it checked out. I’ve messed up multiple fingers and they don’t work like they should now because IMO I was too stubborn to follow any kind of a treatment plan for them.

Also, I first read that a freak flute accident and was then disappointed at the end payoff of the OP.

Yeah, I have a pinkie finger that locks at the middle joint because I didn't get it fixed properly. Makes using pliers a *****

did this to my thumb and now its all doinked up.

Was it really an accident or was Torquemada trying to get another confession out of you?

Been that long I think I would get it looked at. Kind of important for your fingers to work right.

On the bright side, you should be able to throw a hell of a curve ball...

My dad caught a football right in the pinky in high school and it's been crooked ever since. instead of going straight up, it bends outward at the knuckle. Wonder if this will be like that too.

I had the same thing happen a few years back. Tore the ligament from the tip of my finger. Didn't really hurt. Went to the emergency room and had to have a splint for six weeks. You actually need to pull the tip of your finger back a bit before setting the splint to make sure the ligament will reattach. And if you redress the splint you need to make sure you don't bend your finger or you'll have to start all over again. Took another couple of months after that to get normal motion back. My finger looks normal now. If you don't treat it soon it will never heal right.
