With Indy winning its second game now there is a three way tie for who gets the 1st overall pick or I guess you could say the rights to draft Andrew Luck??

How does the NFL decide who picks when there records are the same?

Being a Vikings fan this is very intriguing and something I will be watching closely. What would you do with that 1st pick if you are Indy with Peyton, St. Louis with Sam Bradford, and Minnesota with Christian Ponder and a need for a stud receiver (Justin Blackmon), or a solid tackle in Matt Kalil from USC?

I was listening to the DP show earlier and I believe they said something about strength of schedule. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this would put the Colts at the #1 spot.

yeah, as I understand it, the first tie breaker is strength of schedule, based on the win percentage of opponents.

Next is the division win percentage, followed by conference win percentage.

If all are equal, they flip a coin.

Right now, Indy still has the number 1 pick.
 
So the question remains, what do you do if you're the Colts (Manning), Vikings )Ponder), or the Rams (Bradford)? I don't see Manning caring for someone being groomed to take his place, and IMO the Rams nor the Vikings are going to be interested in drafting a new QB. Being a Dolphins fan I would love to see him drop to them, but I don't see that happening.
 
If the Colts have the number one pick, their owner has already said they'd keep Manning if he can play as well as taking a QB with the first pick.

Well you draft Andrew Luck if your smart, but that won't happen if your the rams or Vikings. They are already invested in young quarterbacks. Those two teams would trade the pick for multiple picks and players. The Colts would draft Luck to sit behind Peyton for a year.

Wrong. He said they would think about taking a quarterback in the draft if they thought he would be the predecessor to Manning. That could be anywhere from the first to seventh round. They will draft Luck though.

Any team would be idiots not to take Luck. Just plain idiots.
 
It's a tough decision for the Colts (if they get the pick).

Bradford and Ponder are young, so they don't have as much worry about 5 years down the road. The Colts have to worry about how much longer Peyton will play. If they only get 3 more good years out of him, are they better off with a successor? Should they draft Luck, groom him, and trade Peyton a few years from now?
It's tough to make that call with a future hall of fame QB on your team. The Packers had a similar situation with Favre and Rodgers, except I think Favre was older. Peyton has the threat of future injury looming.


If I were the Colts, I would guage trade interest for the pick. See how much they can get for it and how far down they would drop in the draft. Unfortunately for them, Barkley is not coming out. More first round worthy QBs would be a benefit.
The Rams, Vikings, Buccs, and Browns all seem to have their QB. The Browns might value Luck over Colt McCoy. The Jags also might feel like they are set with Gabbert.
The Bills, Redskins, and Dolphins would all probably covet Luck.
Could the Colts trade down with the Bills or Redskins (whoever picks first), give them the Pick for Luck, and still be able to draft say, RGIII. I think having RGIII learn for a few years under Peyton would actually be ideal for him rather than a hindrence for Luck.
If Landry Jones comes out (and I hope both RGIII and Jones come out) the Colts to drop further, get more picks and take him later in the first.

The Colts would be smart to draft a very good successory for Manning. they have shown this year how good they are without a good QB. If they could trade down and secure multiple first round picks it might be the best thing for the organization. They obviously need more than one piece if they fall apart this much without Peyton.
 
I'm curious to see what the first overall pick would bring in trade.

I would think it would bring in this years 1st rounder, and maybe next years depending on how far up you want to move. Then maybe this years 2nd rounder as well.
 
if the vikings end up with the number 1 overall i would trade out of it and grab as many draft picks as possible. Giving up on Ponder now just makes you look stupid and was a waste of a first round pick. Give the no. 1 to Seattle or Washington and take their 1&2 draft slot and steal some decent players from them. Might as well build for the future.

Would that be anything like Archie being Peyton's descendant?

They were theorizing on NFL network, last night, that this year's number 1 pick could draw 3 first round picks in trade. That's a gigantic price tag, but if Luck turns out to be as good as advertised, it would be well worth it.

Point. Do you draft an all time great, possibly another Manning--or do you stick with merely a "good" quarterbackm who is also entirely unproven?

That's a really good question. Tough, tough decision.
 
This would have been the perfect situation for the Colts. Draft Luck, have him learn under Peyton for 2-3 years, hope Peyton decides to hang 'em up and if not, trade him off while he still has some value. Basically follow the Packers Aaron Rodgers/Brett Favre mold.
