Rival's Dr. Saturday (aka the newish moniker of Matt Hinton, Sunday morning QB) has his Iowa State preview up this morning. Makes a few mistakes (Jake Knott apparently changed his last name to Trott) but generally gives ISU a fair assessment.

No clue how he arrives at the best case-worst case scenario, though. His best case for ISU next year? 6-6 with a trip to the TicketCity Bowl. Worst case is 1-11. I think anyone who's been watching ISU football for any period of time can see the improvement from year one of CPR's tenure to year two. First year Rhoads did well against an easy schedule, last year he did better against a much tougher schedule. If QB play stays at the same level or even a little better next year, ISU should be bowling.

Not and easy schedule next year, thats for sure. To early to tell but at most, will be favored in 2 games. Not that it means much but...

I think last year he had us at 7 or 8 best case scenario.

That is a really harsh preview from a guy who really doesn't know a whole lot about our program. Jake Trott? Seriously? Sure, we're not the greatest program with the best history, but anybody who has seen Iowa State play under Paul Rhoads knows that we're at least headed in the right direction.

That said, we still haven't done enough to change the "Who the hell is Iowa State?" perception outside the conference. We still have plenty of work to do to get even a minimal amount of respect.

His title that reads

An absurdly premature assessment of the 2011 Cyclones.

should read

An absurd assessment of the 2011 Cyclones.

Seriously, if you are going to take the time to give an assessment of each team you should at least have the full roster and stats in front of you to spell names correct and be able to at least sound like you looked at more than stats.

Going from 7-6 to 5-7 isn't doing "better". Also, we benefited from Texas self-destructing this season. Can't count on that happening every year.

I'm not sure what planet you have to be on for 5 wins to be better than 7 wins. Considering the fact that the schedule is barely getting any easier this year (if at all), and the fact that ISU loses most of its leaders on both sides of the ball (especially offense) I don't see how a best case scenario of 6-6 is that unfair.

Fair enough. Saying ISU did better in 2010 than they did in 2009 is a bit indefensible. I thought the Cyclones played well throughout the year against a tougher schedule in 2010 than they did against a weaker schedule in 2009. With the exception of the offensive line, I thought all units performed better in 2010 than they did in 2009. That led to a worse overall record, but I felt the team was playing at a higher level.

Maybe, but we also lost at home to a team that we beat on the road the year before, and another game was the single worst home loss in the history of ISU football.

Total fluff piece, unless you want to resurrect the old "Arnaud is a mediocre QB" argument, and I don't. I know the guy has to put something out, but why not at least wait until the spring practices and game have wrapped up and we have a better feel for some of the young guys and returning players? There are too many unknowns to make even an educated guess at best/worst case scenarios for next season.

QB rankings....
Who is Baylors QB going to be this year?
Also Kansas?
K-State?
Wasnt both of Tech's QB's Seniors last year? Potts & Sheffield.
So You could really say QB's 6-10 are pretty Unknown? Also adding in ISU's Unknown QB Situation. But If Jantz is the Starter and even accomplishes half of the hype he could be at the top of all of them.

well i would imagine robert griffin hasn't lost his job..

thought he was a senior... ? didnt go to the baylor website to verify.... but even then I would not put him ahead of Landry Jones, Brandon Weeden, or even Tannehill... Then I guess RG, Gilbert, James Franklin. Then A mess with TT, KU KSU, and ISU...

isn't rg3 just going to be a rsjr next year?

I believe Griffin is going to be a senior next year. Started as a true freshman in 2008 and destroyed ISU in Waco. Broke his leg four games into the 2009 season, ISU got a lucky break and didn't have to play Baylor with him in the game. Led Baylor to their first bowl game in forever in 2010.

I can see 1-11 for this team if the QB situation does not pan out. I have to hope that Jantz can get the start and be accurate, this is our only chance. I think the ceiling this season is 7 wins.

Picking on UNI again....

i would rather flame out with Jantz than Tiller. we know what tiller is and he is not very good. I would Like to see jantz and maybe give a spark plug to the team. and I have some hope for next year.

Yeah, I know Jantz is an unproven QB, and if Tiller, Capello or Barnett wins the job I won't be too worried. I don't know how much of the hype for Jantz I should believe But the last time ISU had this much outside hype about an incoming QB was before the 2001 season, and that turned out pretty well. With the exception of the QB (and it's a big exception) and safety spots, this will be Rhoads' most experienced team at ISU. If Jantz turns out to be the answer, this next year could be fun.

What if neither Jantz or Tiller starts.......but we still win 7 games and go bowling? Is that ok with you guys that think Jantz is our "only hope"?

Like I said above, I'll be happy with the QB that wins the starting job. If Tiller, Capello or Barnett make enough improvement in the offseason to win the starting job, or Jantz shows enough talent to take the starting job right away, I'll be fine. I just want QB play to be at a higher level this year than it was last year (and I'm a huge Arnaud supporter).
