Divisions or Protected Rivalries?

Once OU/TX out what rivalries are there to protect in this conference?

Can't think of one can't miss rivalry in the Big 12.

ISU/KSU (somewhat recent, but all in all has been very lopsided until recent)
KSU/KU (yawn)
Baylor/TCU?
I get wanting to keep some of the Big 8 matchups... but not much rivalry to go around.

I don't really get what value protected rivalries bring in a league with 12 team and that will play 9 games. You're gonna play all but 2 teams every year anyway.

What rivalries get left out in a Big 12 West with BYU, OSU, and the Texas schools and everyone else in the East? And if you say it's ISU/KSU/KU playing OSU, how do you protect all of those and still protect OSU's interest in wanting to play Texas teams more than the old Big 8 ones? You can't.

West Virginia/Cincinnati rivalry should develop rather quickly. All of the Texas schools will want to play each other every year. It'd be nice if the remaining Big 8 schools were guaranteed matchups. No need for BYU to be visiting the eastern time zone regularly though.

No divisions necessary; just rotate the schedule with protected matchups and put the two top teams in the championship. If there's a tie, go to the Coaches Poll.

I think there's merit in returning to an 8 game conference schedule, however. It's worked well for the SEC. It would give Kansas a better chance to crawl out of the cellar. More bowl eligible teams = more money.

Divisions suck but one of these protected rivals set ups would do nicely.

2 Protected Rivals
(ISU, KU, KSU)(BYU, TTU, OSU)(TCU, BAY, HOU)(WVU, CIN, UCF)

3 Protected Rivals
(ISU,KU,KSU, OSU) (BYU,TTU, BAY, TCU) (WCU, CIN, UCF, HOU)

I prefer 3 and keeping the Big8 teams together.

There is no way okie lite goes for either of those.

Go divisions. Every other conference has them. Maybe ISU can miss playing Baylor or Okie State when they are in the top 3 in the nation. Must be nice.

North - BYU, ISU, WVU, Cinci, K-State, KU
South - Tech, Baylor, TCU, Okie St, Houston, CFU

There is no need for protected rivalries. There is no Texas or OU for the RRR. There is no OU for bedlam. OU/kNU is long gone. Just set em up and go through a rotation. Missing an opponent once every 4 years or so isn't going to be the end of the world.

And I am also for going back to 8 conference games again. As long as the SEC does it without penalty we should start doing it. And when the league votes it in and announces it they should say exactly why they are doing it. Call the SEC out on the carpet about it. Say the Big 12 will automatically go back to a 9 game conference schedule as soon as all P5 leagues are doing it.

PODS!!!

New Big 12 Map.jpg

8 game conference slate. Play against Pod rivals, then two of the other three pods on a rotating basis.

No Divisions. It should be #1 vs #2 every year for the CCG. If it going to be treated as a defacto playoff game, make sure the best teams are there to represent the conference.

Seems like protected rivalries is divisions under a different name.
Maybe a N/NW and a S/SE split and if you played 8/9 conf games you'd play 3/4 of the other 6 teams on a rotating basis. That seems the best way to have a conference championship game. But honestly I really don't care as long as the conference stays solid and we get to see good football.

I'm a no on divisions. The two best teams overall should make the championship game and not be arbitrarily separated anymore. That is the best thing about the current Big12 (well that and playing every team every year, seriously 10 team conference is great). How they schedule outside of that is less important, hopefully they'll have some type of protected rivalry but honestly I don't think there's any team I'd be too upset if we skipped a year of playing them, except KU for the free win.

It gets you the B1G West is what it does...

Love that. Im actually excited for the novel Big 12. Bring it on.

The Big 12 needs to look at this big picture wise. They are already going to have an asterisk next to their name with OU and UT leaving so IMO they have to be very strategic here. Forget rivalries and forget regional pods. Set this thing up so you have two balanced divisions with the opportunity to realign every few years. The new Big 12 can't afford to have a weak division.
