WTF? Why turn back to Atlanta when you are maybe 30 minutes from DC or any other destination further along the original route

Ops determinization on if those stations can handle a large jet with hundred of passengers needing to be processed dropping in. You know ATL can handle it plus then it is back to a large base with plenty of cleaning, maintenance personnel and once it is ready it doesn't need to be ferried anywhere to get back on the line.

Dulles is larger than Atlanta, but I suppose sliding in another plane with 30 minutes notice is harder to do than to give Atlanta 90+ minutes time to prep

Dulles is not a Delta hub though. Also to take into consideration had the plane burned enough fuel to get below it's maximum landing weight?

I once was on a flight from O'Hare to Cedar Rapids that was halfway and then turned around due to a mechanical issue. The explanation was they were better equipped to deal with an emergency but I think the maintenance capabilities at the United hub were a bigger factor. Probably similar here, but I'm sure the passengers would have appreciated being let off and fly the plane back to Atlanta empty.

I was on my way to interview for a job at the U of Iowa. The trip was a disaster. The flight issues, then there was a large fire next to my hotel, and the weather was awful. Definitely felt like a sign it wasn't the job for me.

Believe it or not, I had something like this happen at my office a few years back. An elderly client of mine had a similar--issue-- on the way out of my office and out the door. Trail lead all the way through my office and out the door. We had to shut the office down for the rest of the day and hire carpet cleaners.

Damn. What a way to get out of work.
