Defensive Tackles - Shane Burnham

Just watched the cyclones.tv post practice interview with Shane Burnham. Is it just me or does he seem exasperated? I believe he has one of the most difficult coaching jobs in front of him this year, but he seemed irritated when Chris Williams asked about how the freshmen are holding up physically. Also, he's talking a lot about pad level and working with both Irving and Coe, guys that are supposed to be in the regular rotation.

I have a lot of respect for Shane Burnham, if he can make a decent unit out of this group this year he'll earn his stripes.
 
My point was not to be scared and/or panic. I have a lot of faith in SBurnham, he's put decent DT groups on the field each year. I'm just saying he's working with raw talent (Coe and Irving) and there is potential this could become a good bunch. If it does become a good group he deserves a lot of credit. I'm sure this is not a challenge he is worried about. Seems like his approach is to keep coaching them up each day.
 
Yeah, that interview screams talented and inexperienced players to me. Which sure is a whole lot better than the inverse. Unless we have a lot of injuries, it should be a unit that gets better and better as the year goes on. Which we will need it to.
 
One thing I have learned in 4 years is the defense has never really been issue when it comes to giving up points. Might give up yards between the 20's but who cares about yardage. Scoring points and maintaining drives on offense has been the overwhelming issue in 4 years or even before Rhoads for that matter. Rhoads finished 6-6 in 2009 with far less talent on both side of the ball, but especially on defense.
 
I'm sure with a lot of younger guys he knows he has his work cut out for him. Probably holding both himself and his players to a higher standard this year so they won't be the position group you can pin losses on.
 
I will just say this, if he is not worried about it he is not doing his job. He gets paid to worry about how the DL will perform. Even if things are looking good, any good leader is always worried about what can go wrong and try to put his people in a position to be successful.

I don't see it that way at all. He sound frustrated with Aka making the same mistakes over and over, but that is natural. Other than Aka he really seemed pretty positive on the other guys. He is not happy with where the DT are at, which to me is good. I want a guy that can see when guys are not there yet, and what they need to do to get better. That is better than Jim Criner's first team that he thought was going to be good and then they got steamrolled by the Hawks.

The fact that he's frustrated tells me he expects more out of this group than he's seen so far, which in turn tells me he thinks the talent is there. He probably wouldn't be as frustrated if he knew that all these guys sucked.
 
No one leaves work every day and is all sunshine and rainbows, especially coaches. I would imagine practice is becoming a real grind right about now. They have been at it a couple weeks, but the first game is still a few weeks away. The initial excitement of getting back to practice has worn off, and I imagine enthusiasm and focus are probably waning a little bit. I wouldn't be surprised at all if there is a little more frustration in everyone's interviews over the next week or so. I bet once game week roles around excitement will pick up a little, and attitudes will pick up because of it.

Our defense has done a great job of giving our offense plenty of time to rest. :rolleyes:

No, I thought his approach would be to sit there and not coach them.

In all seriousness, I think he is just tired and physically exhausted. Displeased with a few things, but as a whole he is happy with the work put. I truly expect us to see the best defensive tackles and defensive line of the Rhoads era by the end of this fall.
