Dana Holgersen is trash

Two things for me. One: I wonder how this will look in the eyes of the powers that be, for the 4 game redshirt rule. While he is fine in the letter of the law, I just don't see this as something good for college football as a whole. What if you are ESPN and a league you have a big contract with has 4 or 5 teams in the league deciding to do this because their play-off picture isn't shaping up like they thought? What if it was Notre Dame that dropped a game to an early nobody, knowing they are probably out of the playoff hunt, decide to redshirt half the starting team? How is NBC going to feel about that?

I don't feel bad for the TV people, just worried that using the rule to this kind of extent, may one day take it back to the old red shirt rules. I like the way it is now.

Two: This can't be good for recruiting in the future can it? What if Dana says, "We'd love to have you, but we plan on redshirting you your freshman year." Does it creep into your mind that, "Well, what if he pulls this **** again when I'm a senior."

What about the seniors that don't get asked to red shirt or can't red shirt though? It's not like the pros, they only get so many years. It doesn't seem like it's right to basically say sorry this year of your eligibility, maybe your last year of eligibility, isn't going to be focused on winning but instead focused on preparing for next year after you're gone.
Like what happened to this kid

Lots of drama with kid... But we all know Holgersen ran from WVA perhaps since he didn't feel he could keep up with the rising stars in the the Big 12 (ISU) anymore and the Houston job opened up. He is far from innocent in the debacle. Go Cyclones!

Dana is rolling the dice. All of these redshirt seniors could end up being grad transfers. That would be great.
This. Plus Idk how tanking exactly works in college football. It's not like they'll get first pick of the best Texas high school players now. And it cannot help recruiting. Seems like a lose-lose to me.

So what would each of you say if after losing to Iowa and Baylor this year, Campbell says, "Welp, this year isn't going as planned so we're going to red shirt Purdy, Bailey (pre-injury), Eisworth, etc."?

This is different than red shirting Hall and Brock now, for example, because they are freshman and aren't necessarily ready for prime time yet. This is giving up on this year and turning your back on everyone else still playing.

Well he recruited Grad transfers telling them they intended to "Win Now". So these kids came expecting full effort and they got a coach telling the best players to red shirt and tank the season for next season.

To be fair, that decision was made after it was clear they weren't going to win now. This is certainly tanking, it's certainly unfair to seniors, and it's certainly better for the future prospects of this team, especially next year.

I don't know where I fall on this. This kid is a piece of work. He medically retired at TTU, then he went to UCLA. He asked UCLA to go get him a 6th year, which they fought for and got, then he left them 2 days later to go to Houston. So, while I'm not a fan of throwing a season away, this guy isn't going to have an easy time staying on that high horse because she is bucking. He doesn't seem to have a great reputation.

This also will give a bunch a guys a chance to play and develop for the future. Is this good? I don't know but this was something that was always really possible with the new redshirt rules. If this is a bug of a much better, more fair redshirt system, I'm great with it.

Obligatory for any Holgs thread....

I had to bump this after watching Houston Cincy highlights.
Dana is bringing that program down, their defensive line was shoved around.
Houston is falling back in to oblivion.

A person has to wonder how much longer the university will be willing to lose/spend 30 to 35 million for a football program that is not playing at a high level?
Its one thing to spend that type of money when you are ranked and going 11-1, its completely another over the last three years 8-5, 4-8 and 2-3 this year.
