Does TCU have a massive wad of cash or something?
Their football program was in a pretty rough place in terms of conference and fan support in 2000. Worse off than ISU. Even based on 2000 standards, that seems like it would have been a clear step down.
Didn't he look at Notre Dame at one point?
Was Dan Mccarney ever in contention for better BCS coaching jobs while at Iowa State? I would think after his 9-3 season his name would have been mentioned for major positions.
Not sure on Notre Dame, but TCU was coming off a 10-1 season in 2000, thanks to LaDainian Tomlinson. It was easy to win in that conference (The WAC at the time) and McCarney was nearly fired at Iowa State after the '98 season, so he may have been a little weary of winning in the Big 12 as is. It was a good area to recruit compared to Iowa State and they have always paid well. Patterson makes $3 million per year.
Actually, he was given an extension after the 1998 season - Iowa State Extends Contract of Head Football Coach Dan McCarney - Iowa State University Athletics Official Web Site - www.CYCLONES.com - The home of Iowa State Cyclone Sports - was it a previous season you were thinking of?[/QUOTe
tcu has plenty of cash on their campus as they sit on top of a nice oil gas shale deposit and their oil -gaswells give them plenty of dollars for scholarships(brain and athletic schollies)...

He was going into the season, then he beat Iowa.
