Was Dan Mccarney ever in contention for better BCS coaching jobs while at Iowa State? I would think after his 9-3 season his name would have been mentioned for major positions.

He interviewed at TCU before they hired Gary Patterson after the 2000 season.

You wonder how history could have been different if he took the TCU job.

And I believe McCarney was on the list at Michigan State in 2002 (as posted above), but not sure he ever formally interviewed. Spartans eventually hired John L. Smith.

Does TCU have a massive wad of cash or something?

Their football program was in a pretty rough place in terms of conference and fan support in 2000. Worse off than ISU. Even based on 2000 standards, that seems like it would have been a clear step down.

Didn't he look at Notre Dame at one point?

Not sure on Notre Dame, but TCU was coming off a 10-1 season in 2000, thanks to LaDainian Tomlinson. It was easy to win in that conference (The WAC at the time) and McCarney was nearly fired at Iowa State after the '98 season, so he may have been a little weary of winning in the Big 12 as is. It was a good area to recruit compared to Iowa State and they have always paid well. Patterson makes $3 million per year.

Seems like a rather odd and irrelevant question. Not that I don't ask plenty of those myself. Why would you care after all these years?
:twitcy:

At one point people were worried he'd be in the mix for the Wisconsin job when Barry Alverez retired due to his ties with Barry and the Hayden Fry coaching tree.

It's interesting that Dan was ready to bail for TCU when the program was on the rise here.

I'm not surprised however that he didn't get hired on anywhere until powerhouse North Texas came along.

Actually, he was given an extension after the 1998 season - Iowa State Extends Contract of Head Football Coach Dan McCarney - Iowa State University Athletics Official Web Site - www.CYCLONES.com - The home of Iowa State Cyclone Sports - was it a previous season you were thinking of?

tcu has plenty of cash on their campus as they sit on top of a nice oil gas shale deposit and their oil -gaswells give them plenty of dollars for scholarships(brain and athletic schollies)...

The rumor was in 2002 that the Michigan State job was all but his....and then the wheels fell off and we only won one more game the rest of the season. At that point they didn't want him anymore. I think Dan knew that 2003 was going to be a down year and wanted to move on before that happened.

He was going into the season, then he beat Iowa.

Mostly, the "rumors" were used to get contract extensions. Danny and his agent/lawyer played that game very well.
