As we enter the last month of the year I would like to propose and start a movement regarding funding of Iowa State athletics. Jamie has been totally transparent through this entire pandemic on the status of where we are. By last count, it appears the deficit this sports year will be $35M and possibly more depending upon what ticket sales are allowed to happen in men’s and women’s basketball.

There will be many people that made Cyclone Club donations in 2020 that didn’t realize all the benefits that are given to them due to Covid-19 restrictions. And I believe that Pollard basically said earlier they could roll their donations into 2021. The problem with that is that you just don’t roll the expenses ( payrolls, scholarships, travel, facility expenses, etc. ) into 2021 and all is good. 2020 expenses are ongoing as will 2021 expenses. Somehow, someway, this deficit will need to be paid for.

I’m asking that ALL Cyclone Club donors consider their 2020 donation as a gift and NOT roll it into 2021, but also give the same amount as they did in 2020. Everyone has paid a price in this pandemic. If we hadn’t had one, the donors would’ve gone to games this fall and many go to basketball games this winter. Let’s just write it off mentally and not back off on the gifting. Continue to make your gifts as if nothing happened. The success our football program has had this year is a very valid reason to do this. Why most college athletic departments are suffering staggering losses and trying to figure out a way to continue, can you imagine the impact Iowa State fans could have on a national basis if we all made a sacrificial gift and underwrote a good portion of that deficit? Can you imagine the statement the fan base could make to Coach Campbell about what we’re willing to do to retain his talent?

I don’t have the technical aptitude to set up a more sophisticated system like a GOFUNDME page for Iowa State athletics, and if someone does I would give as much time and effort as it takes to make this happen. I’d have to believe we’d be the only one to do it in such a style that the country would look at us and ask how we did it.

Join the Cyclone Club at the highest level you can. If someone has the skill sets to create a venue to raise money from thousands of Cyclone fans I’d ask you reach out to me. People say it can’t be done. I think it can. If you took 60,000 football fans and assessed them a one time fee to bail out the deficit it would be under $600/person. Some are capable of far more than that. Others could only give a fraction of that, but collectively we could do it.

Can we somehow come together, using each other’s time and talents and resources and pull this off?

That’s probably correct technically, but there will be pressure put on administration to do so.

My point in this is to be forward thinking and creating a spirit of generosity and try and take out or out a huge dent into the deficit. This athletic department deserves that.

JP, is this you...

I've never been a season ticket holder (too far away and too much time commitment to get to that many games for my personal situation) but most always was a Cyclone Club member anyway, mostly Gold level. After tax laws changed and you couldn't donate and deduct because of the ticket benefits that I didn't use anyway I just shifted over to giving to the athletic scholarship or building funds. I don't get any club benefits but do get the benefit of being able to still deduct it as charity and, of course, it does help the department. Might be an option for peeps not interested in the ticket bennies.

Edit: My take might be superseded by @Ms3r4ISU post #6 on possible deductibility for this year. Might be able to bump your donation and take the deduction?

I would wonder if it's legal. However, we already got a message about the tax deductibility of the donation this year: words to the effect of "if you did not buy season tickets this year, you will be able to claim the entire amount of your donation for tax purposes."

I appreciate your enthusiasm. The athletics department deficit is not on my shoulders.

Most white collar workers are in a better spot financially than before the start of the pandemic. My house included.

We are almost 30 with a young child and will try to be season ticket holders for the first time this coming fall. It's going to take everyone to keep CMC and this staff in place since we lack institutional and oil money, unlike much of the conference. I will commit and I hope those who can will do so at their respective levels! Go State!!!

This year was the first in a while I was unable to donate. Like Boxster I cannot do the season ticket thing any more. Just too many things on the plate in 2020 including a move and some home repairs that made it impossible to swing it.

2021 is looking like it SHOULD be better. And I do SO want to keep CMC and all our great coaches so if at all possible will jump back on the wagon.

I get the nature of this post and I think people that can afford it will likely be generous in the future to help make up the deficit. That being sad ISU is not alone in this problem and I would guess with Pollard being proactive early this year about cutting expenses we may be in a lot better shape than some schools are after this is all said and done. I doubt you see a lot of coaches get fired across the country either because athletic departments probably don't have a lot of funds to afford the buyouts of some of these coaches either.

Not worried about Campbell, if we need to find more money to retain him I'm sure ISU will but I can't imagine there are many schools out there at the moment ready to fork out buying out their current coach and having to pay CMC's ISU buyout too and still be able to afford to pay him significantly more than we can. That is just the reality of the market right now. I also would like to think that Campbell genuinely wants to remain our coach for the foreseeable future and is not going to split hairs over money right now given we have already given him a pay raise and extension just a year ago this week. Maybe they do something again after this season too, who knows.

I wonder if donating to the Grid Iron Club would be another option for you. Honestly, I’ve never explored any tax benefit of my donation.

I wonder how our donations stack up to other schools, as well as schools of our size.

I could be wrong, but if you didn't take advantage of the benefits of the donation it can still be deducted.

Yes it can be deducted this year if you did not benefit from seating location, parking pass, etc. but with the $25000 deduction under the new tax law, it is hard to exceed the "standard" deduction, as it is not a credit, especially since I am retired and on medicare and no longer have "business" deductions.

That said I am in for my current level for next year and we are talking about increasing our level as we rolled over our season tix. Have already given our annual foundation donation to the academic side. Hopefully we all do what we can. GO CYCLONES!!!

In a normal year, that isn't right. I believe that does work this year since you could donate and give up your right to buy tickets. Therefore the donation would be tax deductible.

Here's how the tax code is worded:
Contributions to a college or university if the amount paid is to (or for the benefit of) a college or university in exchange for tickets (or the right to buy tickets) to an athletic event in an athletic stadium of the college or university

Anybody unable to attend games and miss being a season ticket holder, I am willing to wear a wig and dress up as you while attending the games. All I request is that you donate at Victory level minimum and either purchase 4 tickets or a suite. I will still make my donation but will for kindness let you purchase the tickets or suite.

Good sentiment. However, I think this decision needed to be made during the summer before football season. We kept up our donation level for this year, hoping it would have some special benefits. It has. Football season tickets. Able to purchase 4 tickets for several MBB games.

I'm not just a football guy so scholarship donation works well for me as it supports all of the sports. .

That makes sense. I donate to both, but I don’t view them as that different since FB revenue fuels the Athletics Department.

There may be pressure, but it was laid out pretty clearly from the start when they gave people the option of opting out. If donors have the ability to roll over the 2020 donation to 2021, the AD is going to be in a lot of trouble financially.
