Culture or luck?

I think Iowa State football came through the 2020 season without anyone among players in rotation or coaches coming down with Covid. I don’t remember reading that anyone on the team or any coaches were infected and quarantined.

Was this a consequence of a really tight, good culture in the program, or luck?

I wonder whether the team, coaches and support staff have been vaccinated. I guess HIPPA restricts media access to this information regarding any individuals. I do think that if the Cyclones - or other popular teams with big fan bases - took the step of announcing that the program had encouraged (or required), and attained a high level of immunity through vaccinations, others might take notice and also get vaccinated, increasing the prospects for reaching “herd immunity.”

I hope this isn’t too controversial to discuss in this forum. Perhaps I should have posted under the “General” category, rather than “Football”. If mods what to move it, I’m fine with that.

Pretty sure we had our fair share of problems in fall camp heading into the ULL game. As for the rest of the season, the answer is both. I think Campbell even mentioned in a podcast they were lucky even after implementing certain strategies to try and be safer.

Go back and listen to the podcast that CW did with him at the end of the season. It's a bit of both, but the culture piece was a major part. Campbell mentioned that when they thought the season was off and told the players, that's when the cases showed up.

Thanks for the informative replies. I don’t post often, but I go through periods when I spend quite a bit of time reading others’ posts. Lots of ISU and sports knowledge in here (along with some pretty amusing personalities!).

I clearly missed the posts about Covid last fall.

Thanks again.

I agree with your sentiment. I know a couple people who refuse to get the vaccine and I can tell you having their favorite football team get vaccinated won't change their mid.

Fine, I deleted it, its the truth though. I don't know how we ever reach herd immunity if a certain segment of the population refuses to take it because of some lies they read on the internet.

If we don’t... it doesn’t matter IMO. The vaccine is available... if you want it.. you get it.. if you don’t... you suffer the consequences..

Open it up!

Yeah, im past the point of caring now. If people don't want to get it they can deal with the consequences while I enjoy my immunity.

The problem is, that’s only a 90% immunity. So what some genius doesn’t do can still affect us.

To answer (part of) the original question, I think I saw something about ISU arranging a mass vaccination for students shortly on campus.

I would assume athletes are strongly motivated to attend.

If it’s a 10% chance of me catching Covid and with the odds being even lower of being hospitalized... I’ll take those odds (even though they are way lower than 10%)... It’s always going to be here.

Open it up and stay home if you’re scared!

Semantics but that's not what the efficacy means (another thing that needs to be reported en mass), and it's never meant you automatically can't get Covid just like all vaccines operate.

The .008% or whatever number of reported cases in the immunized and the numbers so far of lack of transmission, chances of long term protection via T-Cell response, and reports of healing of long-Covid symptoms should be good enough motivation though to make it not even worth bringing up.

I really hope they start making it easier for us to get on air planes and if you don't like it, stay home or drive!

I flew about a month ago and the only difference from what it was last February was having to wear a mask, not a choice of drinks, and being handed a disinfectant wipe when you board.

Love it! Seeing that full crowd in FL last night for the UFC... makes me want things back to normal.

Not that simple. Should not be a selfish decision - think “we” not “me.” What we have to fear is mutations. It cannot mutate without spreading. It cannot spread if everyone is immune. Probably just got myself in trouble, but facts are facts.
I think the team culture played a huge part in our Covid success. Behaviors matter. Was there some luck involved - absolutely. If you behave correctly, you have a better chance of staying healthy.

I'm not referring to Covid.

Making the point of irony of people calling out low % of dying of some things and the protective measures they are or aren't OK with.

I will continue to avoid crowds because I also hated crowds in 2019.

BTW the chance of dying of an animal attack is like 1/1.4 million. Run!

Are we talking a squirrel or a bear? A squirrel, I feel good about my chances, a bear, not so much.
