The Cubs’ efforts to get their season on track took another hit Tuesday night when catcher Geovany Soto strained his groin blocking a pitch in the dirt in the first inning against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Soto is scheduled for an MRI this morning and could be headed to the disabled list. Class AAA catcher Welington Castillo, who made his major-league debut last season, was pulled from AAA Iowa’s game after one at-bat Tuesday night in anticipation of a possible need in Chicago.

Groin pain may put Geovany Soto on DL - Chicago Sun-Times

Not good for a catcher to have a groin pull.

Dougie Davis eyes
Veteran left-hander Doug Davis was limited to a pitch count in the 60s on Tuesday for Class AAA Iowa as the Cubs prepare him for the possibility of joining the big-league club Saturday for a start on short rest.
Davis is an option the Cubs will consider for the fifth-starter slot filled by reliever James Russell since Randy Wells and Andrew Cashner went on the DL the first week of the season.

It also looks like the Cubs pitching staff is on fumes for the fifth hurler.

I hope they get Castillo up to speed quick enough so Koyie Hill doesn't become the everyday starter while Soto is out. For a team lacking in offensive production right now replacing Soto with Hill is not going to help matters. The problem will be that Hill has worked with the pitching staff and Castillo hasn't so I'm sure Hill will unfortunately get most of the starts while Geo is out.

I highly doubt Hill will get many starts. The only reason Castillo didnt make the roster over Hill was so Castillo could get more reps in Iowa, so I doubt they bring him up just to sit on the bench.

I agree.

The bigger issue for the Cubs IMO is getting Coleman and Russell out of the rotation. The Cubs need to get Wells and Cashner back fairly soon and keep all five starters healthy if they want to have any shot at winning the division.

I think the offense will get better once the weather warms up a little (but so will other teams offenses)

Also, look for Colvin to be in Des Moines pretty soon.

He's been brutal. Maybe it's for the best though now that he has shown that while he's a quality 4-5 outfielder, he just doesn't get on base enough to be an everyday player. The Cubs need to address their outfield in the next offseason. Soriano at least looks like he won't be a complete black hole in the lineup (which is good because he isn't going anywhere with that contract)
