The Chicago Cubs recalled right-handed pitcher Jeff Samardzija from Triple-A Iowa, and he will go into the bullpen, replacing right-handed pitcher Jose Ascanio.
Samardzija has been starting at Iowa, and he's done well, adding a more effective slider to his repertoire of a fastball and a split-finger pitch. He went 5-3 with a 3.72 ERA in 13 games -- 12 starts -- for Iowa. Samardzija went 3-1 in his last four starts.
The 24-year-old Notre Dame product struggled with an 8.10 ERA during five relief appearances with the Cubs from April 23-May 6.
Ascanio was optioned back to Iowa.
