If it's affecting his grip on the bat like he said it was, maybe it's having the affect (effect?) of making him shorten his swing, which might in turn make him more selective at the plate.

I also think it's pretty obvious that the error rattled whoever is pitching for the Nats. To go from what should have been 2 out with nobody on to 1 out with a runner on first, and then to give up that long homer would rattle anybody.
