Wood's blister slow to heal, so he's headed to DL -- ChicagoSports.com

I'm guessing it will be a short lived promotion since Wood is slated to come back sometime next week but Jeff has the opportunity to show what he has in the short time he's up. If the Cubs need another arm for the rotation for instance if Marquis begins to suck again or even in long relief down the stretch I'm guessing if he keeps throwing like he is in Iowa he'll get the chance to be that guy.

I was referring to fans, not the team as much. Although it does kinda suck starting up his FA clock...

This is no big deal. The cubs needed another power arm in the bullpen while Wood is out. Makes sense to me, the kid has earned it.

I believe since he is on a major league contract, his FA clock has already started anyways...

Thanks for bringing this up...I'm sure you can answer this question... Once a guy is called up for the first time isn't there a limited number of times he can be optioned back to the minor league team?

And after that doesn't he go on waivers or become a free agent?

Just because he is on a 'major league contract it doesn't mean his free agency clock has started. This will be his first 'option year' meaning he has to be on the 40 man roster from now on out. By all accounts he isn't ready to stay up there for good. If other prospects pass him up and need to be protected it could cause a problem. If they sign more stars and he is in the minors all year last year, you waste an option year. After three option years you have to clear waivers to be sent down.

I am more concerned about how it could take 3 weeks to heal a blister for wood. Hopefully they are just giving him some rest and they aren't hiding something.

When you throw a power breaking ball like Wood it has to be totally healed before you can do anything. Every time he picks up a ball it probably reagrivatres it. Blisters suck for pitchers!

Yes there are only so many options a player has during his career. I don't have my book in front of me, so I can't explain it any further off the top of my head.

Isn't he already on the 40 man roster? I thought the cubs put him on it this year?

He's been on the 40 man roster since he was signed out of the draft. That was what got him to choose baseball over football, he was given a Major League Contract before even coming to Triple A. Most players have a minor league contract, and then once brought up to Triple A, the organization takes on that contract and is then included into their major league payroll. This is at least how I understand it. If you ever looked last year at the 40 man roster, even when Samardzjia was at Daytona, his name was included on that list of players.

Here is some quick stuff I found regarding the matter.

To be placed on the 40-man roster, a player needs to be given a major-league contract. When teams want to assign those contracts to a minor-league club (that is, when teams want one of their 40-man players to play for an affiliated minor-league franchise) they give the player an "optional assignment" down to the minor-league team (as opposed to an "outright assignment," which we'll leave for another day). An option is not used only when a player is shifted off the 25-man roster and down to the minors. An option is also expended when a player on the 40-man is assigned to a minor-league roster. For example, a player with a 40-man contract who spends his entire season in the minor leagues does use an option even though he never made it to the 25-man active roster of the major-league squad.

And...

First, there is a limit to how many times a team can option a player down. Once a player gets a major-league contract (viz. "is added to the 40-man roster") he is typically eligible for optional assignment in three different seasons. He can be optioned down and called back up as many times as the club likes in each year, but the club only has that right in three individual seasons. There are some exceptions and qualifications to this hard three-season limit:

He was drafted in '07??? So basically next year is the last year he can be optioned to the minors at all. After that he HAS to stay on the 25 man roster.
