.- The Cubs made five roster cuts on Thursday, sending Augie Ojeda, Scott Moore, Matt Camp and Bobby Scales to minor league camp, and optioning Fernando Perez to Triple-A Iowa.
That means Reed Johnson has won the last outfield spot, and will be added to the 40-man roster, and Drawin Barney will be among the infielders.
"First of all, everyone's got a job," manager Mike Quade said. "That's the good news."
The Cubs spared Blake DeWitt by sending down Scales and Moore, who have outplayed him in camp offensively and defensively. Quade said he will now use DeWitt at third as well as second, after using him exclusively at second this spring.
"I said I want to be patient with him," Quade said. "He's going to make this ballclub, and he's going to need to get better, and he will."
Darwin Barney has moved ahead of DeWitt at second. Quade said he was "thrilled to death with the way (Jeff) Baker and Barney have played," and that it's still a competition between the two at second. Barney is hitting .359, while Baker is batting .381.
