So i got through it without a heart attack (had they taken Johnny at 16 i'd be gonzo).....
After they selected OT Zack Martin i felt really good. Then word broke that it was a rushed pick because Dallas really wanted Ohio State Ryan Shazier who was selected the pick before them by Pittsburgh....The story even said that Dallas had just told his dad that they were picking him, so he was going to text his son, when his phone rang and it was pittsburgh.....
So, this left Dallas scrambling because nobody had put Pitts with Shazier....they wanted to trade back and couldnt do so....so they took Martin.
Okay - still a good pick, i'm always ok with picking very good OL or DL....
However, then the "NEED" took over and they made the mistake to give up two picks in a deep draft to satisfy a "NEED" and move up 14 spots.
2nd Round
Dallas trades to Washington 2nd (47) and 3rd (78) to get 2nd round (34) to select DE Demarcus Lawrence. However, had they stayed at their spot, the draft could have fallen directly into their laps and could have really filled glaring holes that successful teams do....especially in a talent deep draft, stay at your spot and get quantity of quality players. This could have been Dallas next 2-3 picks....
2nd Round 47
Konly Ealy DE or Timmy Jernigan DT
3rd Round 78
Kareem Martin DE or Louis Nix DT or Terrance Brooks FS
4th Round 115
Then we get really stupid....We wanted Shazier for OLB for his speed. Then here we pick one of the slowest OLB in Iowa's Hitchins....my guess is he will definitely not be a starter any time soon! Seattle drafting 7 picks after us selected Khairi Fortt who ran a 4.5 with similar size to Hitchins....anybody know why that defense seems to be soooo fast....cuz they are.... If you wanted speed, why not draft speed.
IF you go by the Bill Parcells school of drafting - you should plan on picking a minimum of 3-4 starters every year - to keep yourself salary cap friendly. Instead two years in a row, we've traded away picks when the talent was not significant and the depth was.....last year worked out ok because Frederick and Williams both paid off big time. Escobar seems to be another wasted 2nd round pick!
This is why Jerry never is given the A+ on his drafts...his 1st rounders are usually safe picks - its not getting the 2-3-4 round picks right....Thats where you find starters and depth. I really like Jerry as an owner, just not as a draft day guru....Cant wait for another 8-8 season...Maybe Jerry will say something racist so the NFL could force him and Stephen out....PLEASE....
