We are visiting Iowa State for my son who is a junior and he's interested in running T&F/CC in college. I think he should meet a coach while there but not sure who he should contact or if they are in a period and he can't. He emailed a coach a month or so ago and never heard back. We'd love him to go to ISU but unsure of the process to talk to coaches. Would anyone know who to contact?

ps. He gets recruiting letters from coaches because of his times and grades and his times are close to current roster members from their HS days.

Assuming your son is a distance runner, I would send an email to [email protected], [email protected], and [email protected] that is very specific with things like times etc. I would also try calling into the track/cc office at 515-294-7345 and ask what the best way to make contact with them as a recruit is or ask if you can talk to Will, Jeremy, or Martin.

What times has your son ran?

I ran XC/Track at ISU and while it wasn't under the new regime of Martin Smith and company I have friends who are/were and they tell me the current staff is very picky with their recruitment. Reaching out to them is a great first step and I can't tell you how many runners I know that ended up, and had successful careers, at their respective schools solely because they reached out to the coach.

If you have any questions on how the recruitment works for track/xc athletes feel free and shoot me a PM.

Sophomore times:
800 2:02
1600 4:28
3200 9:25

Since they didn't reply to his email a while ago and other colleges have I was assuming that they may be picky. Especially after seeing Pollard commit and knowing his junior year times. As a Cyclone fan he's disappointed that he receives replies from coaches at schools like Marquette but no reply from ISU. Heck, our HS coach has a connection at Stanford and they've even talked about him because his academics meet their standards and they let him know what times he'd need to run.

I'll try the emails and giving a call. And definitely will take you up on the recruiting questions after I talk with him.

Thank you!

Regarding the compliance issue of whether contact can be made, try calling 515-294-1796 or 3662 or faxing your questions to 515-294-4122.

If coaches can meet with you now, use the above recommendations.

Finally, if all else fails, email Jamie. I hear he's really interested in the track program. Good luck to your son. Hope you enjoy the ISU Classic this weekend.
