I was listening to Murph and Andy this afternoon and they had a poll up on their site asking if people thought Iowa State could win consecutive conference championships in today's MBB environment.
They acknowledged that ISU has accomplished the feat, but a lot has changed since then.
The results of the poll was a 50/50 split last I checked.
Curious to see what people think here.
Personally I think it is still a possibility.

If we can kidnap Bill Self we can win the second. Or the first.

Does "today's MBB environment" just mean that Bill Self is at Kansas? Because no way anyone wins consecutive championships other than Kansas for as long as he is there.

It seems like it's hard enough to get one, but I think it's conceivable if and only if KU doesn't keep bringing in 2-3 NBA players every year.

They will ... The conference will suffer accordingly.

It could happen even with Self there, but realistically a lot of things would have to come together for that to occur.

I don't see it as long as Bill Self is there. KU is now dominating the B12 in MBB to the point where it would make Tom Osborn and Barry Switzer blush.

I would say if Hoiberg truly turns into the next Coach K or someone silimar, that is the only way it would happen. If he has the moxie, I think it's doable. He has to get over that hump to greatness, though, and that's not something you do easily.

KU had lots of talent 2000-2. The difference is ISU had two nba quality talents, plus a number of good role players. IMO Royce has been the only player to come through since then at that level. I like our all our players, but we don't have players who can just take over a game like Tinsley or Fizer could.

The talent discrepancy seems more evident since the switch to a true round robin conference schedule. A superior talented team may be drop 1 or 2 here and there, but playing everyone twice allows them to really separate themselves.

Usually no one team will run away with the title, but it only takes 1 game better then the field.

It can be done. Not likely, but KU can't win every year for eternity. Someone will knock them off their throne, may only be a year or 2 at a time, but it will happen.

i bet if the question was Iowa the results would be different. Just another way for M&A to rag on ISU.

I would definitely say that ISU is in the best position in the near future to end Kansas' streak, though. I think ISU will be the one breathing down KU's neck for the foreseeable future. That's a real nice feeling.

Well it's been a decade now, so I wouldn't put it past them

It can be done. Look at what Fred has accomplished in 4 years. Pretty amazing. If Fred stays, no doubt in my mind it can happen. Players want to play for Fred and the stability of a program is huge to long term success.

At this point ya gotta hope KU does win the league again this year, just so Iowa St can be the team that ends the streak next year...hopefully.

I think we need to play better defense if we're going to win back-to-back championships again. There's a reason why Eustacy is the winningest coach against KU in the Big12 era.

The defense this team plays is fine. They Ded up vs KU about a well as a team can. KU's players can just hit shots and it shots with a hand in their face.

Did you see how SDSU played defense and beat KU? That's how I'd like to play. We're giving up the most points in the Big 12 right now. I wouldn't exactly call that fine. If we are going to make the leap from good to great, I think defense is where it needs to happen. The great KU teams are always known for having salty defenses as well as scorers.
