Coach's tweet

Also, he's refusing to do promotional stuff so he got pulled from UFC 200. Doubt he was scared of Diaz since he pushed for the fight.

My guess is that this was the cause:

Terrible news regarding Joao Carvalho. To see a young man doing what he loves, competing for a chance at a better life, and then to have it taken away is truly heartbreaking.
We are just men and women doing something we love in the hope of a better life for ourselves and our families. Nobody involved in combat sports of any kind wants to see this. It is such a rare occurrence that I don’t know how to take this.
I was ringside supporting my teammate, and the fight was so back and forth, that I just can’t understand it.
My condolences go out to Joao’s family and his team. Their man was a hell of a fighter and will be sorely missed by all.
Combat sport is a crazy game and with the recent incident in boxing and now this in MMA, it is a sad time to be a fighter and a fight fan.
It is easy for those on the outside to criticise our way of living, but for the millions of people around the world who have had their lives, their health, their fitness and their mental strength all changed for the better through combat, this is truly a bitter pill to swallow. We have lost one of us.
I hope we remember Joao as a champion, who pursued his dream doing what he loved, and show him the eternal respect and admiration he deserves.
Rest in peace, Joao.

He's said in the past that he wants to get his money and get out.

Dana said he was pulled form 200 because he wouldn't promote. I buy that.

I don't buy that he's done. He's said he's getting out early but he pushed really hard for this fight and specifics of this fight. I'm a Conor fan but I have some cynical ideas of why he's doing this. Mostly I think it's a money grab that will be hugely successful eventually. Part of me wonders about substances to gain the weight he needed. He's always been very aware of a fight count, though, and this is a way for him to take time off and keep that count down.

Yeah, I wondered about doping because of him going to 170. Maybe he was going to fail more tests and decided to use that as a way out?

They're already counting the $$$ they'll make on Conor's "comeback".

I give it a year at the most.

Hopefully Jones dominated this wknd and they can put Cormier v Jones at 200

I had read by all accounts before this came up, he was a very to UFC and would promote anything. Interesting to say the least...

Can he fight for another organization or is he kind of barred to because he's got to fulfill his UFC fights?
Kind of a record label type question.

It's all about the money to him, he wouldn't fight anywhere else as they can't pay anywhere close to what he would want.

Every sport goes through this, it always starts with the athletes being seriously exploited financially and ends with them organizing and being paid what they're actually worth (which is a lot given the outrageous ticket prices fans are willing to pay and TV ratings).

Wonder how much Vince McMahon will throw at him....he could be another white hot part time WWE superstar like Lesnar.

I don't know what he's contracted for either but I as wondering if he would pursue another option. I'm not sure you can say that someone else wouldn't pay him more. He's hot enough that depending upon the opponent, it could happen I think. Of course, we can't assume that he wouldn't do it for less if he just decides he wants to take Dana down a peg.

Diaz followed up with a tweet too, any more word on whether he was just spoofing McGregor?

This reeks of one big old money grab. Yes, Conor has talked before about getting his money and then getting out fairly early. However, the problem is that he hasn't really even gotten his money yet due to the way the UFC pays their athletes, and this is just one big old ploy to finally get it. Calling it now, Conor is on the books for another fight by the end of the year.

I don't think Conor gets drip money if I remember what I read right. I think he gets paid differently.

None of them are being paid anywhere near market value. Legal contracts would be the only reason they couldn't be offered more to fight elsewhere. It's a matter of time before there's some sort of organized strike or lockout. It will be even easier in a sport like this where all you need is a handful of key guys to match or exceed the top league. It's not like 5 NFL players could leave the NFL and start their own direct competitor. UFC is going to get what they deserve sometime in the next decade if they don't right now, totally inevitable.

There's been competition and none of them have survived. McGregor was probably making somewhere in the 10 million/fight range right now so that's about 30 million a year for your star which isn't out of line for other sports.

What would happen to UFC is the fighters went on strike the day of and Unionized? Tickets, hotels, PPV. That would be a mess.
