Computer virus, need help?

Okay, I accidently clicked to install some microsoft update. Well it turned out to be some virus. Everytime I would do anything my computer would tell me it of a virus alert and I need to download some spyware program. Well I went and searched for the problem on google and through wikipedia the correction was to download some software called Spyhunter.

Spyhunter found the problem but in order to fix it I had to pay $29.99 to remove this virus. So now I can at least get to Cyconefanatic now.

Now my problem is my microsoft update alert is turned off and everytime I go out to update I get the microsoft error to send a report to notify them of the error. The update is trying to look for some ActiveX program, I THINK. When I do a search on how to fix the activex controls everything looks okay.

So has anyboby had his problem? I know I have not given enough details but can someone lead me down the path to get this fixed? Also, everything seems to be running slower when on the internet.

Anyone got the over/under that SpyHunter put the virus there in the first place?

McAfee got me like that, once.

That is exactly what I was thinking as well. I am running my computer with windows xp and it is like I can't get to any mircrosoft updates now. I have spent the last 5 hrs trying to fix this thing. Well it is my own stupid fault for getting into thi mess.

I wouldn't worry at all about Microsoft updates until you know what virus/spyware you are dealing with, and how to remove it.

I would start with a full virus scan. If you don't have a stand-alone application for this, try this online scanner:

Free online antivirus. Download ActiveScan 2.0 and clean your PC. Panda Security

Then I would run a spyware scan with:

Ad-Aware 2008 Free - Lavasoft

I'd say isucyfan is right on the money. I had this problem a few yrs. back, went through the above steps and everything was taken care of. Panda worked so well that I got a subscription.
 
Get a Mac. (So far) there haven't been any viruses written to infect them. Not enough market share for the tools writing the viruses I suspect.

Ahhhh, ignorance is bliss. Some of the nastiest exploits I know of specifically target Macintosh.
 
Windows Defender: Home Page

I've been seeing a new nasty lately that calls itself "antivirus 2008" - no uninstall, no other info. The easiest way I've found to remove it is with windows defender.

I would also run AdAware from lavasoft and Spybot Search and Destroy on the machine to make sure all of the non-virus bad guys are off of the computer.
