College Football rethought - radical changes (probably never happen)

Well, this is certainly something. I like a few of the proposals, such as the bracket buster weekend.

Interesting... I think the 12 team playoff, "bracket buster week" and "champions week" are all interesting. I also like the idea of eliminating FCS games and adding them to the spring.

There are a few things I would do differently:

1) I would not put the bowls at the beginning of the season. instead I would put them in the "championship week"; basically, the playoff committee would select the top matchups to help determine playoff participants... non-championship game participants would be selected for the bowls to win a spot in the playoff. Without /Bowls, Championship games, teams only have 11 games, so all "non-bowl" participants would also be paired up to play in one final game.

2) End the season by mid Jan - no need to drag out the playoffs that long.. have a week off, play every week.

3) Move the recruiting, transfer, and coaching interview windows to after the first two rounds of the playoffs so that you do not impact the end of season (Brian Kelly leaving while his team was still in the running for a playoff bid); by moving these windows toward the end of the playoffs, you should limit the impact of coaching changes on the playoffs...

Bowl season before the playoffs would be an interesting way to make Bowl games more relevant again. Obviously it would have to change a little as you probably don’t want any of the top 8? playing each other. But still have it be great matchups. You could even leave it as a 4, 6(two with byes), 8 team playoff.

In a way it’s expanding the playoffs a ton, but without a bunch of added games.

But yeah I highly doubt it happens.

Bowls
With a 12 or 16 team playoff, will it really matter if players choose not to play in bowl games? With all the top teams in the playoff, the bowls will more than ever be a chance for young guys to play and roadtrip for fans.

The bowl game timing is perfect today- the last 10 days of December when people take time off from work.

Schedule Structure
I would like to see the P5 (or whatever conferences exist) legislate schedule structure to qualify for a playoff berth. Every P5 school should be required to play:
  • 10 P5 games (With super conference would love 10 conference games)
  • 2 non-restricted games (Let schools play P5, G5 or FCS games)
Pretty good chance that if NCAA goes away and conferences provide oversight that G5 schools will be dropped from 12 or 16 team CFB Playoff monies. Opening up more monies to P5 schools.

Conference Championship Games
With a 12 or 16 team playoff, why play CCG's? Guarantee each conference x spots and then have the remaining teams selected by a transparent computerized ranking. No selection committee. Start the playoff the traditional CCG weekend at campus sites. Play the quarter-final the following week (regional sites) and then the semi & final same timing as current 4 team-playoff.

Redshirts
Get rid of redshirts. Every player has 5 years to play 5 seasons. No 4 game limit.

I do think eventually the playoffs will get expanded, making bowl season even less “meaningful”.

But that ship sailed many moons ago with bowl games on the blue field in Boise, or in Detroit.

The bowls aren’t part of the NCAA and are self supporting, so who cares how many there are. I like the fact that you need to be 6-6 and it is a reward.

If you played them before the season, is it the record the year before that determines invitations?

How about 5 years to play the equivalent games of 4.33 regular seasons? So, football would be 52 regular season games, basketball would be 5 years to play 134 regular season games.

If players play every game all four seasons, I highly doubt they return to just play 1/3 of a season. On the other hand, if they miss games due to injury or not ready, they may be eligible to play the entire 5th season.

No redshirts, no medical hardships (or very rare), etc.
