My wife and I ran into the wife of one of the coaches this morning (they exercise together). Anyway, she vented a bit about the game.

She said the staff was caught off-guard by last night. They knew this was going to be a long season before camp started. But they also think they will have a good team next year. So this year is about coaching them up, building some confidence, and hopefully playing some close games.

All of those positive statements to the press during camp weren't coach-speak for fans. It was for the players. They are trying to be positive with the team. You can get on a veteran team and not worry about losing them. They were afraid of getting too down and causing self-doubt with this one. The comments about youth we all heard were (are) a real concern.

They knew the game was going to be tough but were surprised to get man-handled in the 1st and 4th quarters like they did. The 1st quarter is about preparation. The 4th is about toughness. Disappointed to know neither were good enough.

At first glance of game film, some of the worst execution they've seen. Blown assignments. Hesitation. But some bright spots to build from. In the end, she said they weren't angry. But disappointed and exasperated.

Anyway, thought I would share.

Wow. If this is true, I'm not sure what to even say?

Basically this team needs to be "babied" because they are young and inexperienced? Ok. I guess we are in for a long season.

this is a kind of a load of bs and here is why; the defense played good enough to win! The offense is not that young; lots of experience and it just stinks again.

Agreed. If the coaches are shifting the blame to the players, then our coaching staff is even weaker than I thought. Offense especially.

Not entirely true. The defense played well enough to win IN THE SECOND HALF. They were particularly bad in the first quarter. The fact the defense adjusted is promising. The offense - well, I've spoken my mind about that in other threads.

It at least seemed like Wally went into the half and was able to right the ship a bit with some adjustments and stop the bleeding. UNI only managed 7 pts in the 2nd half. That should have been good enough for this offense to come back and win the game.

Unfortunately though, the offensive staff could not come up with any adjustments at all during halftime and the offense actually looked worse in the 2nd half than it did in the 1st half, scoring only 6 pts. That is just pathetic and unacceptable. Wally at least stopped the bleeding and gave us a chance to win the game in the 2nd half after a poor defensive effort in the 1st half.

I dont know why you guys are surprised. We are not Alabama. We are going to have down years like every other team. Y'all need to stop blowing sunshine up your own *****.
It's a young team full of inexperience. If you thought we were going to roll through this season and get 10 wins then you only have yourself to blame, not the team, not the coaches, not anyone but yourself.

wow just unbelievable; rhoads is turning into macarney; this is the crap he always pulled. I just cannot believe how questionable our offense. We need to start having 6 man protection fronts all the time right away; and a running back to help if we have to. my gosh this is a very complicated game i understand but the good teams know how to get first downs and move the chains; and move the chains again and evenutally that will open up the big pass. Oh wait their game plan was to run the ball to open up the big play. That is now how it freaking works; go watch kansas state last year; go watch northern illinois yesterday; go watch ndsu friday night; go watch the teams that won. The teams that won know how to move the chains; how they do it is irrelevant. When Rhoads said what their offensive gameplan was i knew everything i needed to know about this offensive coaching staff. Move the chains and you will be fine; but only had one drive the second half and once they got down by 8 they just had no toughness to bounce back. weak; was the exact same against tulsa too; we are weak. urban meyer said he spent the whole camp getting his team angry; maybe rhoads can take some lessons from a master.

Exactly. Both sides had plenty of blame to go around. If the defense doesnt just straight up give up those first 3 TDs, our poor offensive performance still is likely enough to at least get a win that nobody really celebrates.

I agree with this. I'm not gonna lie. I was starting to wonder if it was going to be a UNI blowout after the 3rd consecutive touchdown.

If I was a betting man this was a defensive coach's wife. Cause the defense did play better in the middle of the game. I get the D is young and they needed to build confidence through camp. But guess what, I bet Nick Saban never gives a **** how a kid feels, they signed up to play B12 football tell them the truth and prepare them for what they are. If they are young and going to make mistakes, tell them you are going to coach it out of them, but until you do go like hell and don't look back. Look If you are going to make a mistake do it at 100 MPH. Then everyone knows you are working hard.

Anyway I am not worried about the D, I think Wally and CPR can figure something out to get it to respectability. The problem is the offense, cause that is where the team has experience, and it still looks like a pile of ****.

As far as the youth, if they have 3 or 4 guys they were going to redshirt that could push for playing time this year, get them in there. A it sends a message to the guys that talent wins, and 2 maybe you avoid going through the same ******* **** next year.

Wally made adjustments before half. The same cannot be said about the other side of the ball.

A BCS program, even in a down year, should never lose to an FCS program. Ever. And it certainly shouldnt just get dominated by one like we did.

The defense played good enough to win??? I must have caught a different game on Cyclones.tv last night because I saw a defense getting gashed. Neither side executed well.

Wasn't UNI equally young or even younger? Combine that with the 20+ less scholarships. Sure sounds like the staff simply got out coached... After the Tulsa bowl disaster and getting beat by a FCS team I hope they wake up, especially the offensive staff.

I don't think anyone thinks we are Alabama but in year 5 of the program ISU's down years should involve comfortably beating FCS programs. This goes for all BCS programs as well, even Kansas.

It's worth pointing out if you take away a couple missed tackles and we have finish off drives in the red zone it's a whole different story. It's also worth pointing out that we almost lost to them two years ago, and still went on to have a decent season.

Yeah, because he has HS All-Americans waiting in the wings. In case you haven't noticed, we don't. Don't compare us with Alabama. Not fair.
