Coach Rutter?

Coach Rutter moved (his choice?) to Director of Basketball operations from the lead assistant before McD left. It was mutually decided that he stay on as DOB.
IIRC, Rutter was suppose to be a pretty could scouter of opponents and putting a game plan together.
Am I correct that he cannot do that this year, and he also cannot be on the court during practice?

If true, it is interesting, because during games he looks like one of the conventional bench coaches, contributing the same in huddles, etc. After the game he was going over notes and stats. Perhaps all DOB's are like this. Either way, I think he is an asset to the program.
 
I think that he's a great asset, not only in scheduling and scouting, but also in just showing Fred the ropes of the inner workings of being the HC at ISU. From what I remember, GMac basically demoted Rutter to get an extra assistant to recruit with. That was when he was hiring Nurse and Grayer. I think that the DoBO can coach on the floor and in practice, but he can't be on the road to recruit. Otz and McRoy do most of our recruiting anyway along with Fred.
 
I'm pretty sure that Rutter was demoted because McDermott needed a change and he was not happy about it. I think the only reason he stayed was that he has a kid that is close to graduating from high school.

I think as DBO he can scout and do pretty much anything off the floor, but he can't coach at practice. I think he can work the guys one on one.

I also think he is probably a great asset for Hoiberg since he does have so much expirence. I had heard, but of course I don't know, that he wasn't upset about taking that spot on Hoiberg's staff.

One of the things that I wonder about this staff is if they have any issues working for a guy who has a lot less expirence than all of them? It seems like it would be slightly annoying to feel like you know more about coaching then the guy getting the big bucks. If the staff truly has as good of chemistry as they say, that would be huge.

Also, anyone know where TJ was last night? I assume recruiting, but it would be nice to know who he was looking at.

With many coaches, yes, that would be a problem (both for the assistants and the head coach). I think what helps Freddie is that he's a natural leader. He won't come off with the "I'm the boss" attitude. He will do his thing, and expect people to follow. And they will. On the assistant's part, after you reach a certain level of maturity, I think most people understand that it's not all about age or experience level.

One thing I've noticed a few times is going into timeouts the coaches will all get together and talk for a minute before going and talking to the players. I'm assuming they are discussing what each of them sees and talking things over. I really like how Fred seems to be getting input from everyone and then relaying that to the players.

And you can read his mood a little by how long that lasts.

When he calls a timeout to stop the other team's momentum, he signals the players to gather around him immediately. no conference at that point. He just goes right into whatever he has for them.

I like watching how he adapts a little based on the game situation.

I agree. Its pretty interesting to watch Fred grow as a coach. He seems to be doing a great job, but we haven't had a whole lot of adversity yet. It will be interesting to see how he coaches some Big 12 games (like Kansas) where we will probably get down 10+.
 
Rutter has a son who is a junior at Gilbert. He his a great guy with a wealth of basketball knowledge.

What happened was Ron was the Ops dir and he retired. Erik Crawford was Rons assistant and was set to take over. Mac had to make a change and it needed to be with a new assistant coach that would bring some good PR to Mac and make people think he would turn things around. Jeff is a good guy so Mac didn't want to fire him. Mac moves Jeff to Ops and then he has room to hire. Really only Erik was getting shafted. But then Mac went to CU and took Erik with him...

I also think that the fact that he was about a half step away from becoming the General Manager of the Timberwolves gives him some instant credibility with college coaches. Not all college coaches want to become GMs in the pros, but I think they all understand that it is a pretty prestigious position to have.
 
Didn't Hoiberg bring in a guy from the Timberwolves and from NJ to be the assistant director of OPs? He will probably take over for Rutter if/when he leaves?
 
I was a little surprised he stuck around. I thought he and Mac were pretty good buddies and figured he would follow him to Creighton.

I like the fact he's here along with TJ. Provides some continuity and they're both really solid people and coaches.

CFH thinks very highly of Rutter. At the event in DSM last Friday he said Rutter has notebooks full of plays, and anytime he is looking for a particular play Rutter can find it for him. CFH said he is very detailed, and a huge asset to his staff.

As posted earlier, he wanted to stay as he has a kid in high school. I think McD may have wanted to bring him over as Creighton's DOB.
