So I have been lurking these past few years as I saw little hope in the basketball program the way it was being led. Yet I didn't want to come on and just beat up Prohm everyday. And I won't here either. But I can say that even after 3 of 4 losses the joy is back! I have enjoyed this team as much as any other because of their effort and their mentality to just never quit. They are DEPENDABLE. And much of that credit has to go to TJ. So I just wanted to highlight some of his great coaching in last nights game.

  • Playing the 1-3-1 for parts of the game threw KU off at times. It also allows us not to get into foul trouble and reserve some energy.
  • Sticking with Jones - I admit after 2 missed layups I was screaming to get him out. In the end he contributed greatly and played better than Conditt last night.
  • Intentionally fouling at the end of the first half to throw off the timing of their designed play.
  • Resting Brockington strategically to make sure he was fresh for the last 5 minutes.
  • Using his timeouts to try and stop KU runs.
  • The inbounds play when we only had 2 seconds on shot clock. Brockington missed but had a bunny.
  • The play we went ahead on next to last possession. No standing and dribbling. A quick sharp cutting Brockington for a quick jumper. Very decisive.
  • The push after KU's last basket. Believe me that has been practiced and they knew exactly what they were doing. Quick inbounds, fast Hunter push, and Gabe was open. Also, sure that if KU had not gotten back Hunter would have taken it all the way.
Tough loss but man I enjoy this team and TJ has made some great moves. (BTW, I was not thrilled with the TJ hire. But he has proven me wrong just like he did again last night with sticking with Jones. )

I have very little to complain about last night regarding strategy and bench management. There were good wrinkles, rotations that made sense and players put in positions to make plays. Just came up 1 point short.

I think more coaching may have occurred around this team in the last 6 months than the previous 6 years.
I think there was probably plenty of coaching but it was likely disjointed without a clear plan or purpose. Sometimes that can be worse than no coaching. Otz has excelled at laying out a plan and a purpose to what they are doing and why they are doing it. The payoff is real.

I'm still sick about last night, but the future is bright. The fact that the NCAA tournament is likely this year at this point is a minor miracle given the expectations coming into the year.

My only consolation from last night is that this KU team isn't going to do anything. They will be lucky to get 3rd in the Big XII and they won't get past Sweet 16. We almost beat them with our B game at their place.

If our team can stay invested and focused through this stretch, we will handle them at home.

I think Otz was a little frustrated toward the end of the game that he couldn't get the players to full court pressure on some made baskets. Green was a little worked up, too.

I might be exaggerating, a bit.

There is not a situation where TJ doesn't have a plan at least. Execution isn't consistent but it is clear he always has a plan.

Dude was going a bit Weber last night along the side line though, but I'll allow it

Loved the 1-3-1 zone to mix things up, with Kunc at top and Brockington in the middle.

I am utterly amazed that EVERY SINGLE TEAM in the Big XII basically presses most of the game, in some fashion, now. That's such a change from 3-5 years ago.

Not sure if anyone saw our inbounds plays, but guys were so open for layups and the inbounder just didn’t want to hit them without thinking about it. Those split seconds cost us a couple buckets. I like Tamin as our trigger man going forward.

Agreed, lot of upside potential with TJs system. I think this team will grow into it some yet this year and future talent will help as well.

Still way ahead of the curve I expected.

Agreed. The offense goes a little stagnant/uncreative at times, but it's light years better than Prohm and TJ doesn't have all the pieces yet. The turnaround has been unreal.

I was a little disappointed that we haven't seen the crisp ball movement and movement without the ball that we had seen earlier in the season but then I remembered that we have been facing elite defenses in very physical games. Freedom of movement isn't a real thing so that weave motion is going to be impeded. This team is so much better when the ball doesn't stick though.

i think this has a lot to do with the shortening of the shot clock.

you can lightly press a team into taking 8 seconds to get across midcourt and have them take another 3-5 seconds to get organized into a set. this leaves them with less than 20 seconds remaining on the shot clock. it is much easier to defend hard for this shortened possession.
