Looking back at the 2017-2023 classes today. 2017-2018 were really good classes, then 2019-2020 had WAY too many misses (See 2021-2022 on field production). 2021 and beyond has resumed the approx. hit rate that the 2017-2018 class had...

Did CMC and staff get lazy, change strategy, or loose focus as a result of the wining after the first two classes? And what has changed since then to return back to having good success with high schoolers from 2021-2023 (Not counting 2024 since they haven't seen the field, but On3 and 247 HATE the class)?

Class Rankings through the years (247 composite):

2017 - 52
2018 - 55
2019 - 46
2020 - 46
2021 - 59
2022 - 39
2023 - 42

It would be neat to do a detailed comp on the classes - look at the player ratings inbound, and then give them a rating based on how they turned out in reality. Like a batting average.

You bring in 20 guys in a class, but 12 never do anything (zero), 5 contribute (one point), and 3 are all-conference (three points). Something like that, but well thought out and fastidiously researched.

Maybe this is already done somewhere. And it's tough to do for players still playing, very much backwards-looking.

I personally don't get too bothered by ratings. What's more important is on field success. The rating for the incoming class is more or less their "potential". I think it's more relevant to evaluate the class once their collegiate days are over.

For the 2021 recruiting class specifically, the impact of the pandemic on summer camps and high school football should not be overlooked. The rules around events and distancing made recruiting and evaluating more difficult, and this impacted both recruiters and recruiting services. There was also the impact of the extra COVID year for guys already in the program forcing the coaching staff to adjust their recruiting targets. In my mind, the 2021 recruiting cycle should be thought off with as asterisk.

As far as our current class, the youth of the roster impacts both how many spots open up for incoming guys, and how much NIL money is being allocated to retention versus recruitment.

I don’t really take much stock in ranking. The 2020 class, our best, the two best players were near the bottom. The top, none really worked out.

Also the players we were recruiting for that class knew that there was a chance a big part of the team would come back in 2021.

Watching the Lions today got me to look up Laporta, Hockenson, and Kittle on the recruit ratings. None were highly rated and basically their only Power 5 offer was the Eyeballs. More stars in a class leads to better players in general. However, a couple of 4 stars can really move teams around in the team rankings.
