It's so hard for me to pick a favorite, it all depends on my mood. On Christmas Eve with a gentle snow fall I'd pick "It's A Wonderful Life". If I get home from having drinks I'll throw in "Christmas Vacation". If I just want something on while I'm doing stuff around the house I'll put on "A Christmas Story".

If I had to choose one, it would be "A Christmas Story".

A Christmas Story. I first saw it on a premium movie channel half awake in the middle of the night and the TV on. I gradually woke up to become completely engrossed and enchanted by it and had NO idea what it was. Of course it eventually became very well known.

True confession. I've never seen It's a Wonderful Life. I think I've seen the ending 15 minutes or half hour several times but never seem to catch it from the start. Maybe one of these days...

It's a wonderful life is probably my favorite on that list. I would probably watch any of them except the big screen version of "how the Grinch stole Christmas" do like the tv half hour version though.

1. A Christmas Story
2. Love Actually
3. Christmas Vacation

Die Hard =/= Christmas movie.
Sorry but you are taking an L on this.

9 reasons why it is:

9. IT'S ACTUALLY SET DURING CHRISTMAS

8. THE SOUNDTRACK FEATURES NO LESS THAN THREE CLASSIC CHRISTMAS SONGS

7. ALAN RICKMAN IS THE MEAN OLD MAN WHO WANTS TO RUIN CHRISTMAS FOR EVERYONE

6. IT DOESN'T RUIN THE ILLUSION OF SANTA FOR THE KIDS

5. LIKE ANY CHRISTMAS MOVIE, IT'S ABOUT FAMILY

4. THERE'S A SANTA HAT AND WRAPPING PAPER INVOLVED IN MAJOR SCENES IN THE FILM

3, THERE MAY NOT BE REINDEERS, BUT THERE'S DEFINITELY MAGIC ON SHOW

2. DIE HARD WILL ALMOST ALWAYS GET A VIEWING OVER THE CHRISTMAS PERIOD

1. IT SNOWS AT THE END OF THE FILM

Nah. It's no more a Christmas movie than Lethal Weapon.

I voted Elf because it's the only one I could watch it more than once a year and not get bored of it. I do watch pretty much all of the others once though, and parts of A Christmas Story more than once but only because someone always turns that 24 hour deal on every year.

Christmas is not central to the plot of the movie, therefore, it's not a Christmas movie. If the movie took place during, say, Presidents' Day, the plot still holds (although the Santa hats and Christmas songs would be a little weird). If you moved, say, Christmas Vacation or A Christmas Story or It's a Wonderful Life or Elf or any other actual Christmas movie to, say, Presidents' Day, the plot doesn't hold up.

The only reason why a small, vocal minority names Die Hard as a Christmas movie is because this small, vocal, wrong minority doesn't like Christmas movies - or perhaps hates Christmas altogether.

If Die Hard is a Christmas movie does "Trading Places" count? It is set during the Christmas/New year" time frame. I haven't seen it in a long time, I should watch it again.

Nope. Love that movie, but Christmas isn't central to the plot of that movie, either. If Christmas isn't mentioned once in that movie, it's still about a pair of rich dooshbag brothers sending their best employee to the poor house and a homeless man to the penthouse in a "science experiement" - and a bet for a dollar.
