With Matt Campbell and all of Cyclone football being roses, I thought Iowa State fans might enjoy reviewing the status of an old rival.

Chris Klieman must be either stupid or have the biggest balls in all of college football. He left a national championship team to take the reigns of a team picked to finish 9th in the Big 12. The only bright spots at K-State are the return of a fairly large and somewhat talented senior class along with an experienced junior quarterback.

Bill Snyder left Klieman some huge holes to fill in the roster. There are 0 running backs on the squad that have had a single carry in the Big 12. No back-up quarterback has taken a single college snap. There is absolutely no depth along the offensive line, at tight end, at fullback, or at linebacker. The best linebacker tore up a knee in the spring and is out for the season. The fastest and most talented wide receivers have been booted from the team because they were not good citizens.

To make Klieman's challenge even larger, the outlook for the 2020 season is even bleaker. Kansas State has a total of 17 scholarship sophomore and juniors on the squad for the 2019 season. Snyder's recruiting was not real good and the retention rate was extremely low. K-State will no doubt have the youngest team in the Big 12 in 2020.

So, you tell me, is Chris Klieman stupid or does he have the biggest balls in all of college football?

Neither. He, like me and most professional men desire more money and prestige in his career. His best move was to FBS and better yet to the P5. What he is is a professional D1 football head coach.

Successful FCS coaches jump to lower level FBS jobs all the time, don’t they? I don’t see it as a huge deal.

Kleiman is a good coach and nice guy. I nearly walked on at UNI, and it was mainly because of his recruitment and the opportunity to play for him.

Nearly every guy that gets hired to replace someone is going to have challenges, that is part of the deal. Campbell had zero starts on his first OL, and it showed, a lot in the first few games. Things got better.

Klieman was a great hire for KSU, because he is very much in tune with what Bill Snyder did. Run the ball first, throw occasionally, and don't give up anything cheap. If he can recruit to KSU he, like everyone that has made the jump to the next level, he will be fine.

I think he's the perfect fit at KSU. I'd much rather be there, if I was him, than Illinois, Colorado, Indiana.

I dont see KState at the Sugar Bowl level again (or for a long damn time) but I totally think they can succeed with him.

Campbell was in the exact same situation when he took over. Look what he has done in the past 3 seasons. 1st season there were some pains but he turned it around after that.

If Klieman is any good he will be able to turn things around but your fans will need to give him 3 years. It takes time to develop players and depth. ISU finally has some depth but our OL has been the weak spot because the cupboard was empty and no depth.

Yeah and at least ISU and KSU have fans that care and will stick it out thru some of the tough times.
While I think Gary Patterson or Venables would have been a great hire (yes, I know the history with Gary) a few years ago, Klieman makes some sense, style wise.

With all the close kicks to the nuts games iowa State has gotten from kstate the past decade..I really hope kstate sucks for a while. As others have said probably not likely.

Not really any different for a new coach to do a rebuild. If he fails, he still got a nice payday.

Yeah, there's pretty much zero downside. If he doesn't succeed, he still gets paid. Might be a hit to his resume, but a guy like that could probably have his pick of open P5 coordinator jobs if it got to that point. I do think that he'll do pretty well eventually. KSU has some tradition and past success and good fan support. Kleiman maybe isn't used to doing more with less at NDSU, but he is comfortable with recruiting the Midwest and developing players. A power team can be successful in the B12 because it's different than most offenses in the conference. I would have concerns about Messingham though. He was a disaster at ISU.

When you look at Bohl, who pretty much created the monster at NDSU, he left for Wyoming, which I actually thought was a questionable decision. Kleiman to KSU? That's a no-brainer.
