If you've ever read about this guy's life, he was an extremely weird dude. Massive paranoia and really couldn't adjust to life in a normal environment. I guess that's something that happens to many chess champions though.
Too bad for him though, it's funny to think of a time when Chess players were international superstars.

I watched his match against the Russian on TV. It was quite a marketing event - facilitated because we were still in the cold war.
Without reading the article, is this the dude that berated Jeremy Schaap from ESPN and told him his dad was an idiot or something of the sort?
You are correct. I think Schaap confronted him at some press conference because he said some anti-semetic stuff. It had something to do with Jeremy's dad (**** Schapp).
Well, Bobby did it too. But as just posted, Fischer made anti-semetic remarks about **** Schaap....I couldn't remember for sure what the confrontation was about.

I think Bobby Knight said that Jeremy is an idiot, only got the job because of who his dad was, and will never be half the reporter his dad was... Which isn't that far from the truth ; )
I remember seeing Bobby on the Tonight Show (with Johnny Carson). They gave him one of those pocket puzzles (with the 15 tiles and one empty space) that had been scrambled. He looked at it for 5 - 10 seconds then started moving the tiles and got it completely in order in less than 20 seconds.
Even I thought he was a little odd back then because he trained for his match in South America rather than the states because the US beef was too tender.
I watched the Spassky match with great anticipation and was very disheartened to see Bobby fall behind 0 - 2. His comeback was amazing.
It is a shame that he became such a disturbed person but then again so did Howard Hughes.

this all happened on some espn show like the sports reporters or something. it was pretty good tv to watch. bobby kept saying nasty stuff about jews and then the younger schaap (name?) said something to the effect of bobby-aren't you jewish? then bobby f. said something to the effect that the jewish community had given him a "clean bill of health" meaning he was no longer jewish. the guy was nuttier then squirrel ****.
