The
Cubs placed
Carlos Zambrano on the 15-day disabled list Friday with lower back soreness, a move he didn't try to fight.
Zambrano said he'd been "feeling weird" the last two or three starts, but Thursday's one-inning outing was the worst, and he aggravated it on a play at first base.
"Any time I go to the DL, believe me, it makes me angry," he said. "But I know the Cubs do it for a reason— to protect me."
General manager
Jim Hendry said that to "rush him out there for one more (start), to me, made no sense. He certainly wanted to pitch one more time."
Triple-A Iowa starter
Ramon Ortiz will take Zambrano's spot in the rotation next Tuesday. Zambrano will return the weekend after the All-Star break, missing two starts.
