When are these teams going to learn that signing a 30 + year old player to a 10 year deal is gonna sting in about 4 years...

I'm a Yanks fan and thought going 7 was MORE than enough!

I can't help but feel Cano is a bit greedy with this move...

Have fun sipping Coffee at Starbucks in October, because you won't be in the playoffs anytime soon...

I used to get upset at players for going after the big money...but no longer feel that way. Go get it while you can, put forth a great effort and see what happens. What I don't understand is MLB organizations handing out 10 year contracts! I guess an organization has to do what it has to do for a player to sign with them but wow! 10 years is a long time...and he will be 31 next season! Crazy to think about!

Assuming it's a straight 24 million a year I think he'll be underpaid for a couple seasons, properly paid for a couple more, and then overpaid for a majority of the contract.

What upsets me is that the money is virtually no different...just the length of the contract. There's no more loyalty in sports and it bothers me...I guess that's just the way things go these days.

The Yankees would've most likely retained him after 7 years, kind of Jeter style move, so Cano would finish his career as a Yankee.

I see your point though...these are guaranteed contracts so Cano is $80 million richer by signing with the Mariners.

There's talk that it may be weighted...more initially and tapers off over time, but that's just a rumor. Either way it's hard to see him be that productive in a lineup with no protection and a pitcher's park...I guess we'll see!

He has a family to feed you know. I can't believe that GMs and owners still do this. It's mind boggling. Especially in Seattle. Someone on this board name 3 Mariners players other than Hernandez.

I don't know why these teams keep giving out these 10 year contracts. Your never going to get your value year in and year out for 10 years. And as a player, I would sure take 20 million less to play on a World Series contender every year then go and play up somewhere where nobody gives a rats ***** about baseball. But at least the weather is always awesome in Seattle.... (sarcasm) Cano could have went down as one of the all-time great Yankees, he's a stud. And I hate the Yankees.

The 10 year Pujols contract isn't looking very good now. On top of that the Cardinals drafted Michael Wacha with the Pujols compensation pick.

Albert Pujols
Josh Hamilton
Alex Rodriguez
Mark Teixiera
CC Sabathia
Robinson Cano will soon be joining this list of mindnumbingly stupid contracts.

Thank you Seattle for out Yankeeing the Yankees.

Yankee fan here and hate to see him go but didn't want another 10-year A-Rod like contract. Weird that Seattle is going into this. Once you get to these pay levels is a few million plus or minus really that big a deal? Is this all about the agents influence?

What is the difference in lifestyle in making $10M a year versus $24M a year? I suppose you can go build a stupid palace size mansion ala Jeter but I just don’t get it. Gotta just be ego and greed. Man, if I were an elite level athlete I would take less to play in NY, Boston, St. Louis etc especially if you started there and could build a career legacy. Gibson will always be a Cardinal, Mantle was always a Yankee and Williams was always a Red Sox. Cano will just be a great second baseman.

If you've watched the last scene of Money Ball, I think Pete nailed it. It's not about what the money gives you in the future. It's what it says about what you've done.

It's always easy to tell someone else they shouldn't take an extra $14M a year.
